What is the best travel tripod that wont break the bank for my Canon 90D? Im so excited because I just got this camera and Im still learning how to even turn all the dials but I have a big trip to the Scottish Highlands coming up in like a month and I really want to get some good shots of the scenery. I keep seeing people talk about travel tripods but I have no clue where to start or what brands are even good.
Is a $100 one okay or is it gonna fall over the second the wind blows? The 90D feels kinda heavy to me so I want something that can actually hold it up without wobbling. I really dont want to spend more than $150 if I can help it because I already spent so much on the camera and a extra lens. Also it needs to fit in a carry on bag because I dont trust the airlines with my stuff.
Is carbon fiber worth the extra money or should I just get an aluminum one? Sorry if these are dumb questions I just really dont want to mess this up and end up with a blurry photo or a broken camera...
In my experience, the Scottish Highlands wind will chew up and spit out those flimsy $50 tripods. I've tried many budget setups over the years and the 90D is heavy enough that you really need something rated for a high payload. Dont worry about carbon fiber right now... tbh, at under $150, a solid aluminum build is actually better because the extra weight helps keep things planted. I'd suggest the Manfrotto Element MII Aluminum Travel Tripod. It handles about 8kg and folds down small enough for a carry-on. Quick tip for you: always look for a hook at the bottom of the center column. If it's windy, hang your camera bag from it. That extra mass stops the micro-vibrations that cause blurry shots when you're doing landscapes. Its a total lifesaver.
Just saw this and had to jump in because I absolute love Scotland! I did a road trip through the Isle of Skye last year with my 90D and let me tell you... the wind there is no joke. I made the mistake of bringing a cheap $40 tripod my first time and I spent the whole trip holding the legs down so it wouldnt topple over. Not exactly the relaxing photography experience I wanted! Since youre on a budget but need something that wont give up on you, I highly recommend looking at Vanguard VEO 3GO 235AB Aluminum Travel Tripod. It is seriously amazing for the price. Here is why it works for the 90D:
Like someone mentioned, that wind is no joke. What lens are you taking? I am super happy with my Vanguard VEO 3T 235ABP, it is really sturdy for my 90D and fits my carry-on.
