sorry if this is basic but i just got a used 7d mark ii for my kids soccer games and the card i have is way too slow. i dont know anything about speeds or brands but need:

  • something fast for bursts
  • under $80
  • reliable brand

what should i actually buy so it doesnt freeze up?

I love the 7DII for sports! Seriously such a beast of a camera. I remember being so frustrated when I first started shooting my nephews games because my old cards just couldnt keep up with the burst rate. Ngl it felt like the camera was broken lol. You really wanna stick a fast CF card in that first slot because thats where the real speed is. Honestly, SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB CompactFlash is my absolute go-to for reliability and it usually stays way under your $80 limit. I also grabbed a Lexar Professional 1066x 64GB VPG-65 CompactFlash recently and it has been fantastic for long bursts without freezing up. Just make sure you arent letting a slow SD card in the second slot slow everything down if you use both at once. Its such a game changer when you can actually fire off a burst and not wait!

I learned the hard way at a soccer game once. Actually brought a bargain card and missed a goal cuz my buffer was stuck. Be careful with those cheap ones. You might want to consider how the dual slots work too, since a slow SD can actually drag down a fast CF card. I would suggest looking at the actual write speeds, not just read. TL;DR: slow cards bottleneck your 10fps burst.
