I am literally tearing my hair out trying to pick a single lens for my Japan trip next month. I finally upgraded to the R8 because it is so light but now every lens I look at feels like it ruins the whole point of a compact setup. I am basically torn between the RF 24-105mm f/4L and that 24-240mm superzoom. My logic was that the 24-105L is the pro choice and since I will be in Kyoto where it might rain the weather sealing seems like a must but then I look at the 24-240 and that reach is so tempting for street shots across the road. But then its like 750g which is heavier than the camera itself! Then there is the cheap 24-105 STM which is tiny and fits my budget better

  • I really want to stay under $1100 total - but I am worried the image quality will suck in low light once the sun goes down in Osaka. I keep going in circles because if I get the heavy zoom my back is gonna kill me after ten miles of walking but if I get the small one I will miss the reach. Is the L glass actually worth the extra weight on such a small body or should I just suck it up and get the superzoom for the versatility? I just want one lens that does everything so I dont have to mess around with swaps in crowded places...

Unfortunately, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is not as good as expected; the slow aperture is a major letdown for evening shots. I also had issues with the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM being way too unbalanced on the R8. Just get the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for $1099. Honestly, its the only choice that provides the weather sealing you need without compromising your image quality.

Unfortunately I found the bulk of the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM really distracting on such a tiny camera. I had issues with the balance during long walks. If you want to keep the weight down but still nail those night shots in Osaka, look at the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM. Its way lighter than a zoom and much better when the sun goes down.
