I'm looking for recommendations on the best wide-angle lens for my Canon EOS R5. I primarily shoot landscapes and night photography, so I'm interested in a lens that offers excellent image quality and low-light performance. I've heard about the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, but I'm also curious about other options, including any manual focus lenses or alternatives from third-party manufacturers. What do you suggest for achieving stunning wide-angle shots with the R5? Thanks in advance for your help!

Seriously tho, I was stressing over the price of the Canon L zooms for months! I finally decided to skip the brand loyalty for a bit and grabbed the Laowa 15mm f/2 Zero-D for my R5. If you are doing night photography, this thing is a beast. The zero distortion is legit amazing for landscapes where you want straight horizons without weird stretching in the corners. I know people get scared of manual focus, but honestly on an R5 with focus peaking? Its a piece of cake. I spent way less than I would have on the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM and the image quality is so sharp it actually scares me a little lol. Plus, it takes standard filters which is a huge win for landscape guys like us who dont want to carry those massive filter holders. Def worth a look if you want to save some cash for travel instead!

Get the new released Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM lens. compact and image quality is good.

I've found the RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM to be an excellent choice. It's significantly lighter than the f/2.8 version, maintains great image quality, and gives you that extra 1mm on the wide end which can make a surprising difference in tight spaces. The f/4 aperture is rarely limiting since most wide-angle work is done stopped down anyway.

Finding a wide angle that actually holds up to the R5 sensor is honestly a letdown lately. I have been looking at a ton of technical data on corner resolution and flare resistance but unfortunately everything seems to have some kind of deal breaking flaw or builds that just feel flimsy. It totally reminds me of my cousins experience last year:

  • he bought a top tier lens for a big trip to the desert
  • the weather sealing failed during a minor dust storm
  • sand got into the focusing group and basically totaled it He was so frustrated because he spent more time trying to clean his gear than actually shooting the milky way. It was a whole ordeal with insurance and shipping it back to the manufacturer just to be told it wasnt covered. Really makes you second guess the build quality on these newer mirrorless optics...

RF 15-35 L is the best choice.
