I'm looking for recommendations on the best microphones for the Canon EOS R5. I primarily shoot videos outdoors and need mics that offer good wind protection and can connect via the hot shoe or 3.5mm jack. I've heard that some mics can pick up camera noise, so I'm also interested in options that minimize this issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Exactly what I was thinking
Been thinking about your R5 setup for a bit... Before you commit to the more expensive recommendations, I would suggest clarifying what your actual budget is? Also, are you typically recording subjects close to the lens or at a distance? I ask because its quite easy to overspend on gear when a modest setup might honestly serve you better for outdoor run-and-gun stuff. You might want to consider the Rode VideoMic GO II or the Movo VXR10 Universal Shotgun Microphone as reliable, budget-friendly alternatives. Be careful with mounting any mic directly to the hot shoe tho, as lens motor noise can still bleed through the frame despite the shock mounts. A common DIY fix I use is a simple cold shoe extension bar to offset the mic further from the lens. Also, make sure to invest in a high-quality furry deadcat windscreen... the stock foam covers are rarely sufficient for real wind. You can often find generic versions that perform just as well as the expensive brands for a fraction of the cost.
I personally opted for the Sennheiser MKE 600. It’s been fantastic for outdoor shooting sessions where wind noise can be a hassle. The option to power it either via an internal battery or phantom power makes it super flexible—especially when paired with my Canon EOS R5 on the field.
I'd recommend the Sennheiser MKE 400 G2. It's compact, has great battery life, and the sound quality is exceptional for dialogue. The low-cut filter and gain controls right on the mic make it perfect for run-and-gun shooting with the R5. Plus the headphone monitoring jack is super useful.
