Best affordable external flash for the Canon EOS R50?

So I just got the Canon R50 like two weeks ago and I'm totally lost with the lighting stuff. I tried taking some photos of my friends at dinner and they all came out really dark or like super grainy looking because I guess the light was bad. I saw people saying I need an external flash but when I look online there are so many options and I dont even know what most of the words mean like TTL or slave mode? Its all very confusing honestly. I really need something that is easy to use because I'm a total beginner and I dont want to spend hours fiddling with buttons while everyone is waiting for the photo.

Here is what I am looking for:

  • Budget is around $100 maybe? I could go a bit higher if it makes a huge difference but I spent a lot on the camera already
  • Needs to be small-ish because the R50 is tiny and I dont want it to tip over
  • I live in Chicago and I want to get it before my cousins graduation party in three weeks
  • Just needs to work without me having to be a pro at it

Is there something that just plugs in and knows what to do? I heard some flashes dont work with the new Canon mount thingy on the R50 so I'm scared of buying the wrong one. If anyone has this camera and found a cheap flash that actually works please let me know... I'm kind of drowning in all the technical specs on Amazon.

Just saw this! Like someone mentioned, check used gear! I love these:

Honestly, just grab the Godox TT350C Mini Thinklite TTL Flash. I use it on my R50 and its been great because it actually fits the small body. TTL is the feature you need—it basically means the flash and camera talk to each other to set brightness automatically.

  • Super lightweight so it wont tip over
  • TTL makes it point-and-shoot easy
  • Fits the R50 shoe perfectly It makes things way easier for family parties.

Saw this today. To add to the point above: the TT350C is decent, but the R50 hotshoe is kinda weird since Canon removed the physical center pin. You might run into compatibility issues. Before deciding, I have a couple questions:

  • Are you planning to bounce light off ceilings, or just point it straight?
  • Do you need it mostly for indoors or outdoor fill light?
