So I finally pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II after saving up for months and man, my bank account is feeling it. I have got a massive wedding shoot coming up in downtown Chicago this October and I am slightly terrified about the battery life since I have heard this thing is way more power hungry than my old R6. I am basically looking at two main options right now and I cannot decide if the upgrade is worth it.
On one hand there is the standard BG-R20 which is what, like 350 bucks? It does the job, gives me the extra battery, and makes vertical shooting way easier which is huge for portraits during the ceremony. But then I see the CF-R20EP with the cooling fan and the ethernet port. My logic was that maybe the fan would be a lifesaver if I am doing 8K clips or just long stretches of 4K 60fps during the reception but it is nearly 500 dollars. Is that fan actually gonna make a difference for a wedding photographer or is it mostly for hardcore cinema guys?
I am also wondering if anyone has tried using the older BG-R10 on the Mark II yet or if Canon totally blocked that with the new battery communication stuff. Budget is getting tight after buying the RF glass too so I am really torn if I should just play it safe with the basic one or go all out...
Congrats on the R5II! It is such an amazing beast! Quick question, are you planning on heavy 4K slow-mo for the reception? If your budget is tight, skip that expensive fan grip and grab:
I just did a massive wedding marathon in the heat with my R5II and man, the Canon BG-R20 Battery Grip is amazing! Unless youre filming everything in 8K RAW, the Canon CF-R20EP Cooling Fan Battery Grip is totally overkill for weddings. My old Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip technically fits but the camera limits those insane burst rates... honestly dont risk it, just grab the standard BG-R20 instead!
The old BG-R10 technically fits but it limits your top-end features. Go for the Canon BG-R20 Battery Grip so you actually get the performance you paid for. The fan version is overkill for weddings since you probably wont be shooting 8K raw for hours.
