Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS 6D Mark II and I’ve been absolutely loving the full-frame jump, but I’ve hit a bit of a snag during my longer shoots. I do a lot of portrait photography and event work, and after a few hours of holding the camera vertically, my hands are starting to feel pretty cramped. The body is great, but it feels a bit unbalanced when I have my heavier 24-70mm f/2.8 lens attached.
I’m looking to add a vertical battery grip to help with the ergonomics and to double my battery life using two LP-E6N batteries during long wedding days. I know the official Canon model is the BG-E21, but I’ve seen a few third-party options from brands like Vello and Neewer that are significantly cheaper. I’m a bit worried about whether the third-party ones maintain that weather sealing that the 6D Mark II is known for, or if the shutter button feel is mushy compared to the native one.
Does anyone have experience with which specific battery grip fits this model perfectly without any connection issues? Should I shell out the extra cash for the official Canon BG-E21, or is there a reliable third-party alternative that you’ve found works just as well for professional use?
In my experience, the Vello BG-C15 Battery Grip for Canon EOS 6D Mark II is basically the best budget move. It’s like $60 usually, way cheaper than the Canon BG-E21 Battery Grip. I mean, the shutter button feels a bit different—kinda clickier—and you gotta be careful cuz the weather sealing might not be 100% same as the body, but it handles that heavy lens no problem. Honestly, saved me a ton of cash. gl!
> "I’m a bit worried about whether the third-party ones maintain that weather sealing..." Quick question—do you shoot in the rain much? I once had a knock-off grip short out during a misty wedding shoot... not fun! Between the Canon BG-E21 Battery Grip and the Neewer Vertical Battery Grip for Canon EOS 6D Mark II, the Canon is literally a tank, whereas the Neewer feels kinda flimsy. Lesson learned: for pro gigs, that official weather sealing is worth every penny for the peace of mind.
honestly I had a ROUGH time with a cheap grip once where the dial just stopped spinning... unfortunately it ruined the shoot. I'd suggest the Pixel BG-E21 Replacement Battery Grip for Canon EOS 6D Mark II cuz it's cheap but reliable:
- solid build
- good button feel
Anyway, the sealing is NOTHING compared to official gear. If ur on a budget it works, but dont trust it in the rain!!
I totally agree with the guys above about the reliability factor. If you are doing pro gigs, you dont want to be fiddling with a loose connection while the bride is walking down the aisle. I've tried a few and the Meike MK-6D2 Battery Grip is probably the best of the cheap bunch, mostly because the buttons don't feel quite as mushy as the Neewer ones. Quick tips:
