I've been relying on the built-in flash on my Canon EOS 90D for way too long, and I'm finally ready to invest in a proper external speedlite. I primarily shoot fast-paced indoor events and family portraits, so having a unit with a quick recycle time and consistent E-TTL accuracy is a must for me.
I’ve been researching the Canon 430EX III-RT, but I keep seeing people recommend Godox units like the V1 for their value. I'm a bit concerned about third-party reliability and how well they handle the 90D’s autofocus assist beam in low light. Does anyone have long-term experience with a specific flash that hasn't let them down? What would you recommend for a $250 budget?
Sooo, i once tried a cheap knockoff at a busy event and it literally died when i needed it most. For your 90D, I would suggest sticking with OEM gear for real consistency.
> I’m a bit concerned about third-party reliability and how well they handle the 90D’s autofocus assist beam in low light. Ok so I saw this earlier and had to jump in. I actually started with a super cheap flash years ago and it literally died during a family reunion... never again!! For your $250 budget, you really gotta look at the Godox V1-C Flash for Canon versus the Godox V860III-C Flash for Canon. The V1-C is honestly great because of that round head. It makes the light look so much more natural for those indoor portraits youre doing. Plus the Li-ion battery lasts forever and recycles way faster than AAs. However, like you feared, the AF assist beam on Godox units isnt as precise as the ones on those Canon Speedlite units mentioned earlier. It projects a red grid that sometimes doesnt line up perfectly with the 90D sensors in pitch black rooms. If you need absolute reliability but want to save cash, maybe check out a Nissin i60A Flash for Canon. It is super compact but punches way above its weight class. Just make sure to test the E-TTL accuracy before a big event... anyway gl with the choice!
I've been shooting events for a long time now and honestly, you dont need to drop huge money on a single light anymore. Over the years I've switched almost entirely to third-party gear because the value is just insane.
