Which battery grip is recommended for the EOS 5D Mark IV?

So I finally pulled the trigger on the 5D Mark IV after shooting with my trusty Mark III for like five years and man the sensor is great but I am hitting a wall with the ergonomics. I do a lot of portrait work and some sports on the side and I have always used the vertical grips because I hate how the camera feels without that extra meat on the bottom especially with my 70-200mm f/2.8 II attached. Here is the thing though I thought my old BG-E11 would just swap right over but obviously Canon changed the pin layout or something because it is not fitting right and I am seeing some weird error messages when I try to force it.

I have a massive three day destination wedding in the Bahamas starting in ten days and I am kinda freaking out because I need that extra battery life and the vertical shutter button for the ceremony. I looked at the official Canon BG-E20 but man it is like $300 which seems crazy for a plastic box but I am worried about the weather sealing if I go with a third party like Vello or Neewer. Does anyone have experience with the third party ones on the Mark IV specifically regarding the AF area selection button? I heard some of them feel mushy or stop working after a few weeks and I cannot have this thing fail on me mid-shoot. Should I just suck it up and buy the OEM one or is there a specific off-brand that actually holds up to professional use?

Honestly, I have been super satisfied with the Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark IV since day one. If you are doing a big wedding, dont risk it with the cheap stuff.

  • The AF area selection button has that perfect clicky response.
  • Weather sealing matches the body perfectly.
  • Batteries sit tight with zero communication errors. It feels way more rugged than the third-party ones, totally worth the peace of mind imo.

Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, I have been super satisfied with the..." i totally get the cost concern. I have tried many over the years and the Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark IV works okay but buttons feel mushy compared to OEM. Quick tip: test for battery drain before your flight; some leak power overnight. Are you shooting on the beach? Salt spray in the Bahamas is no joke for gear without legit seals.
