What battery grip do you guys suggest for the 90D? I usually buy OEM but the BG-E14 price is stinging a bit.

I’ve got a long weekend shoot coming up and really need that vertical shutter. Is the Vello one a solid alternative or should I just bite the bullet for the Canon brand...

Re: Just saw this after a few hours of... honestly, I have been using the Neewer Professional Vertical Battery Grip Replacement for BG-E14 for a while now and I am really satisfied with the performance. I did a deep dive into the circuitry because I was paranoid about frying my board, but the voltage regulation is surprisingly stable. I took it on a three-day wildlife shoot last spring and it worked great:

  • The tray mechanism is solid and does not rattle when I am moving fast.
  • It handles high speed continuous shooting without lagging the shutter response.
  • The rubber grip texture matches the camera body almost perfectly. You can usually find it for around 45 bucks which leaves room for extra Canon LP-E6NH Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries. Just be sure to wipe the pins with a bit of alcohol before you first mount it to ensure a clean connection... it makes a huge difference.

Just saw this after a few hours of shooting. I actually tried to save cash with the Vello BG-C9 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D back when I had my 80D. While it works for the vertical shutter, you gotta be careful because the build quality is night and day compared to OEM stuff. My biggest gripe was the weather sealing... the 90D is built to take a bit of rain, but these third party grips usually skip the rubber gaskets. I had a scare during a damp wedding where the dial started skipping values because of moisture. Also, make sure to watch the locking wheel. Mine used to vibrate loose after a few hours of walking around. If you are doing a long weekend, it will probably survive, but the buttons just feel mushier. It basically comes down to how much you trust the electronics inside not to short anything out...
