What's the single most essential accessory for any Canon EOS DSLR?

Hey everyone! Just got my first Canon EOS DSLR (a Rebel T7!) and I'm super excited to dive deeper into photography. I'm looking to grab one really crucial accessory to start with, beyond the basic kit lens. The sheer amount of gear out there is overwhelming, and I want to make sure my first purchase is genuinely impactful.

I'm thinking about something that truly improves the shooting experience or protects the camera, not necessarily a fancy lens upgrade just yet. Like, should I prioritize a better, more comfortable strap, a super-fast SD card for continuous shooting, or a dedicated cleaning kit? For any Canon EOS DSLR user, what's *the* single, non-negotiable accessory you'd recommend first?

Congrats on the T7! I stumbled on this and had to chime in because I'm always worried about gear failing or getting damaged. Before I give a solid recommendation tho, what are you actually planning to shoot? Like, landscapes in the wind or just family stuff indoors? I looked into the technical side of a few things for my own kit because I wanted reliability:

Pros: High write speeds mean you wont get that annoying busy signal on the screen when taking multiple shots. It's super stable.
Cons: More expensive than the basic cards you find at big box stores.

Pros: Provides a physical barrier. It is way cheaper to replace a filter than a lens if you accidentally bump into something.
Cons: Can occasionally cause slight ghosting in high-contrast night shots if you arent careful.

Pros: The safest way to remove dust without actually touching and potentially scratching the lens coating.
Cons: It is kind of bulky to carry around. Ngl, I'd probably start with the SD card just for the peace of mind that your data is safe, but let us know your plans!

Congrats on the T7! Honestly, when I first started out with my setup, I was so worried about something failing or running out of power while I was still trying to learn the menus. I spent a lot of time reading about the technical side of how data is written to cards and how the battery cycles work because I didn't want to lose any photos, you know? I basically decided that for me, the most important thing was making sure the camera stayed powered up and the data was safe. Here is what I prioritized to keep things running smoothly:

  • A spare battery because the screen stays on a lot when you are a beginner tweaking settings
  • A high quality memory card with a fast write speed to avoid that annoying buffering delay
  • A simple screen protector to keep the back display from getting scuffed up in my bag I think having that extra power is the most essential thing? Tbh, I was always nervous about the camera dying right when I finally got the focus right. It really changed the shooting experience for me because I stopped checking the battery bar every five minutes and just focused on the pictures. It is just more reliable that way, right?
