I recently picked up a Canon 5D Mark IV and I’m planning a three-week trip through Japan next month. I absolutely love the image quality, but I'm starting to realize how heavy this setup can get after a full day of walking. I’m especially concerned about battery life while shooting 4K video and managing those dual card slots efficiently on the go. I already have a decent backpack, but I feel like I’m missing some essential 'quality of life' gear for a body this size. Does anyone have recommendations for specific straps, compact power solutions, or must-have rugged accessories for the 5D Mark IV? What’s the one item you never leave home without when traveling with this camera?

yo, honestly i'm still kinda new to the 5D Mark IV, but man that thing is HEAVY after walking all day. i was super worried about neck pain tbh. i compared a few straps and here's my take: - Peak Design Slide Camera Strap SL-BK-3: pros are the quick adjusters and crossbody style. cons? the padding is a bit stiff at first.
- BlackRapid Sport Breathe Camera Strap: pros are the security and speed. cons are that it’s bulky under a backpack. i went with the Slide cuz it fits better with a bag. for power, i'm really cautious about off-brand batteries cuz they might swell, so i just stick with Canon LP-E6N Lithium-Ion Battery Pack. if you're doing 4K, maybe grab 3 of them?? also use a SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro CompactFlash Memory Card with a SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card as backup. basically better safe than sorry!! gl!!

Respectfully, I'd consider another option when it comes to the strap situation. NGL the 5D Mark IV is a tank, and while the Capture Clip is cool, mounting that much weight to a backpack strap for three weeks makes me super nervous. Basically, putting all that torque on the tripod thread while you're jumping on and off the Tokyo subway can lead to some wear and tear you might want to avoid... plus it can make your bag feel totally lopsided after a few hours, you know? You gotta remember the 5D4 has a bit of an older architecture too—the SD slot isn't UHS-II. This matters because if you're shooting 4K, you're gonna hit a write-speed bottleneck fast if you don't use the CF slot for the heavy lifting. Here’s a more cautious, budget-friendly approach: - I'd suggest the Joby UltraFit Sling Strap for Men instead of a clip. It’s way cheaper than the boutique brands and keeps the camera at your hip. It feels way more secure for a heavy body, I mean, I just trust it more when I'm in a crowd.
- For the dual slots, you really gotta utilize that CF bay for 4K. I'd grab the Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB CompactFlash Card. It's reliable and actually fast enough to keep up with the 5D4’s massive 500Mbps video files without dropping frames.
- Power-wise, maybe look at the BM Premium 2-Pack of LP-E6NH Batteries. They're cheap, but honestly, be careful. Make sure to check 'em for swelling after a long day of shooting video cuz 3rd party cells can get pretty hot compared to the OEM ones.
- Also, grab an Altura Photo Professional Rain Cover. Japan is beautiful but rainy, and I'm always paranoid about those top LCDs getting moisture in 'em!! Anyway, just my two cents. gl on the trip! peace. 👍

Seconding the recommendation above! That strap is a lifesaver. Over the years, I've found the best way to save ur neck is a Peak Design Capture Clip V3—it basically mounts the camera to your backpack strap so the weight is on your shoulders instead. For 4K video drain, I always carry a Nitecore UNK2 Dual-Slot USB Travel Charger so I can charge batteries via power bank while walking. Also, grab a GGS Larmor Gen5 Screen Protector for Canon 5D Mark IV—it’s actual glass and keeps that screen safe while traveling. Japan's gonna be awesome, enjoy!

ngl the 5D4 is such a beast and I totally agree that the weight is a huge factor for a long trip - it’s kindaaa exhausting after a while. I’ve been doing a ton of market research since I’m still learning the ropes, and it seems like brand reputation really matters for these older EF setups. - For your dual slots, honestly just stick to the big players like SanDisk or Lexar - they basically have the best reliability ratings in all the tech deep-dives I’ve read.
- For power, original Canon batteries are usually best for the circuitry, but if you go third-party, just get anything from Watson since they have a really solid reputation for cell life.
- If the weight is still killing you, maybe look into bags from Think Tank or Lowepro - they've been around forever and really focus on that pro-level ergonomics. Honestly, is it true that the weather sealing is better with the official batteries? I'm sooo worried about that since Japan can be rainy. But yeah, prioritize those legacy brands and you should be fine!
