Hey everyone! I finally did it—after saving up for months, I pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark IV. Coming from an older Rebel series, the jump in build quality and performance is absolutely insane, and I’m honestly a little intimidated by all the settings. I’m mainly planning on using this beast for a mix of wedding second-shooting and some high-end landscape photography during my travels.
Right now, my gear bag feels a bit empty. I’ve got the body and a solid 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, but I’m realizing that a pro-level body like this needs the right supporting cast to really shine. I’ve already noticed that the 30.4MP files and 4K video capabilities eat through storage way faster than I expected. I’m currently using some older SD cards, but I’m confused about the dual slot setup. Should I be investing in high-speed CF cards for the main slot, or is a fast SD card enough to keep the buffer clear during burst shooting?
I’m also debating the ergonomics. The 5D is already quite a bit heavier than my old setup, so I’m on the fence about getting the official battery grip. Does it actually help with the balance when using heavier L-series glass, or does it just make the camera too bulky for travel? Also, I’ve heard mixed things about third-party batteries—do you guys find that the Mark IV is picky about using non-Canon LP-E6N batteries, or is it safe to save a few bucks there?
Lastly, since I do a lot of tripod work for landscapes, I’ve been looking at L-brackets and screen protectors. I’m sitting on a remaining budget of about $500 to $700 to fully kitting this out. For those of you who have been rocking the 5D Mark IV for a while, what are the absolute 'must-have' accessories that never leave your bag? Is there a specific piece of gear that changed the way you use this camera?
Totally agree with the above! - Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip is HUGE for balance with L-glass
- Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB CompactFlash Card saves cash over SanDisk!
Ok so, grab a SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro CompactFlash Memory Card cuz CF is faster for buffers, and maybe a SmallRig L-Bracket for Canon 5D Mark IV 2202 for $40... just make sure to tighten it tho!
> Is it safe to save a few bucks?
DONT buy generic batteries! They'll literally fail during bursts, and saving $50 isn't worth a ruined wedding. Stick to name brands for reliability... honestly, it's safer.
Ngl, moving from a Rebel to the 5D series is a huge jump in terms of how you handle the gear. When I made the switch, I realized the stock neck strap was basically torture for long wedding days. I did a deep dive into the market to see what held up better than the standard Canon stuff, and honestly, the third-party ergonomic market has come a long way - it's not all cheap junk. Here are a few things that actually made a difference for me after comparing a few brands: * Peak Design Slide Camera Strap - It’s way better than a standard strap for heavy L-glass because you can wear it like a sling. It balances the weight across your shoulder much better than a battery grip would for travel work, tbh.
* ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold Memory Card - Since the 5DIV SD slot is a bit of a bottleneck compared to the CF slot, I found these are pretty much the sweet spot for reliability. ProGrade was started by ex-Lexar execs, so the QC is top-notch compared to some of the budget brands.
* Vello Screen Protector Ultra for Canon 5D Mark IV - This is actual static-adhesion glass. Pretty much a must-have if you’re doing landscape work in the wind/dust. I was also on the fence about the grip, but I eventually skipped it to keep the weight down for travel. If you're doing a lot of tripod work, you might find that a high-quality strap and a solid card reader for those huge files are better investments for your remaining budget!
