Hey everyone, I just finally upgraded to a Canon 5D Mark IV after saving up for months. I am coming from an older Rebel series, so this full-frame setup feels like a huge jump. I want to make sure I am fully prepared before my first big shoot next month.

I am a bit overwhelmed by the options and want to avoid buying junk. Specifically, I am looking for advice on:

  • Reliable CF cards that can actually handle the 4K video bitrates
  • Whether the official battery grip is worth the extra bulk
  • A solid L-bracket for tripod work

I really want to get the most out of this camera. What are the absolute essential accessories you would recommend for a new 5D Mark IV owner?

Congrats on the upgrade! I have used the 5D4 for years. For cards, the Delkin Devices 128GB Cinema CompactFlash 1050x handles 4K way better than most generic brands. Regarding the grip, the Canon Battery Grip BG-E20 is tank-like with weather sealing, tho the Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark IV works if you are tight on cash. Also, check out the SmallRig L-Bracket for Canon 5D Mark IV 2202... its super solid and cheaper than the boutique brands.

Congrats on the 5D IV! For video, the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB CompactFlash 160MB/s is my go-to because it is rock solid compared to the Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB CompactFlash which can be hit or miss. For the L-bracket, the Really Right Stuff B5D4-L L-Plate fits like a glove, but the Kirk Enterprise Solutions BL-5D4 L-Bracket is also great if you want to save a few bucks. Honestly, the grip makes it way too heavy for long days.

Totally agree with the guys above about the 4K bitrate being a total beast on this camera. It eats storage like crazy. If you want a cheaper alternative to those high-end L-brackets, I have been using the SmallRig L-Bracket for Canon 5D Mark IV 2202 for about a year now and it is basically indestructible for a fraction of the price. It fits the contours of the body perfectly and doesn't block the side ports. For cards, I found that the Kingston Canvas Focus 128GB CompactFlash Card is a solid performer for the price if you are trying to stay on budget. Also, since you are coming from a Rebel, just a heads up that the 5D4 is a battery hog, especially in live view. If you decide to skip the heavy grip, definitely grab a couple extra Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery packs. The newer NH version has a bit more juice and works perfectly in the 5D4.
