I finally treated myself to a 5D Mark IV and I am so hyped to start doing paid events this summer! My first big gig is my cousins wedding in August and I desperately need a solid flash for the reception because the lighting is gonna be terrible.
I keep seeing the Canon 600EX II-RT recommended but its so expensive and then I saw people hyping the Godox V1. The round head looks cool but I read some scary reviews about it overheating during long shoots which makes me nervous. I only have about $350 left in my budget so I cant really afford the high-end Canon brand new. Is the Godox actually reliable for a long wedding day or is there something better?
To add to the point above:
> I read some scary reviews about it overheating during long shoots which makes me nervous. Totally get that anxiety! Weddings are high-pressure enough without worrying about gear melting down mid-toast lol. But seriously, Godox is fantastic and has come such a long way lately. If you have a $350 budget, you are actually in a really great spot because you can afford the newest tech that solves those exact problems. The Godox V1Pro-C TTL Li-ion Round Head Flash specifically fixed a lot of those thermal issues people complained about with the original V1. It is way more reliable for sustained firing and it is amazing for wedding receptions. But if you want to be extra safe and save some cash, I really love the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash. Since it uses a standard head, it doesnt trap heat quite as much as the round ones do, and it is a total workhorse on the 5D Mark IV! The lithium batteries are the real game changer here. Honestly, forget carrying 20 AA batteries in your bag like the old days... its the worst. One of these Godox packs lasts forever. You could grab the V860III and still have money leftover for a Godox XProII-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger if you want to try some off-camera lighting later. Its such a fantastic setup for the price!
Building on the earlier suggestion, third-party gear is honestly amazing for your budget! Just use high-capacity rechargeables so your recycle times dont lag during the party. TL;DR: Quality third-party gear is fantastic!
