Just got a 90D for my cousins wedding in October and Im so hyped! I saw the Godox V1 and Canon 430EX III-RT online but the Canon seems pricey for what it is and people say the Godox hot shoe breaks easily. My budget is around $200. Does anyone have a solid flash recommendation for the 90D?
> My budget is around $200. Does anyone have a solid flash recommendation for the 90D? Ngl, if you are shooting a wedding, dont go with the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT. It is decent but way overpriced for the power you get. For that $200 budget, you should look at the Godox TT685II-C Speedlight for Canon. It is reliable and leaves you extra money for batteries. It does everything the Canon does but has better wireless range for off-camera work. If you can stretch the budget slightly, the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash for Canon is the real winner. The lithium battery is a life saver since you wont be fumbling with AA packs during the reception. The Godox V1-C Round Head Flash for Canon is nice too, but the light quality difference isnt massive. Id honestly go with the V860III... the recycle speed is just better for fast action. Just dont be rough with the hot shoe.
Saw this earlier but just getting a chance to reply. In my experience shooting events, you really want something with a lithium-ion battery for fast recycle times. Honestly, skip the AA batteries for a wedding if you can. I've tried many setups over the years and the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash for Canon is the sweet spot for a 90D. They actually upgraded the hot shoe to a metal quick-lock version lately, so it doesnt snap like the old plastic ones did. If thats pushing the budget, look at the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II TTL Speedlite for Canon. Its a workhorse that clones the pro Canon units for way less. Also, check out the FlashHavoc website for deep dives on gear. Theyre basically the gold standard for comparing these things. Grab a MagMod MagSphere 2 Flash Modifier too... soft light is gonna be your best friend for reception shots.
Just caught this thread. @Reply #1 - good point about the Godox features, but in my experience, I've actually had better luck with Yongnuo when it comes to raw durability on a budget. I've tried many setups over the years and while Godox has the ecosystem, Yongnuo units often feel a bit beefier in the hand. If you're worried about the Godox shoe issues, check out the Yongnuo YN685 II TTL Speedlite for Canon.
Like someone mentioned, V1 is pricey. I disagree on the high cost tho; the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash has GN60 power and full HSS for way less. It basically does everything.
Late to the party but honestly, reliability is the biggest thing when you're doing a wedding. I learned that the hard way when a unit I was using basically just stopped firing halfway through the reception. It was a total panic moment. Tbh, while the newer mounts are definitely better, I've seen people overtighten them and actually damage the camera hot shoe itself, so just be gentle when you're locking it down. Another thing to watch out for is thermal shutdown. If you're shooting fast during the ceremony, some flashes can overheat pretty quick. I usually try to space out my shots or keep a second one ready in my bag just in case. Just make sure you practice with whatever you get before the big day so you know exactly how long those recycle times take when the battery starts getting low... nothing worse than missing the kiss because the flash wasn't ready.
