I have been doing a lot more vertical shooting and long event sessions lately with my Canon 90D, and I am really starting to feel the need for better ergonomics and extra power. I know the official Canon BG-E14 is the standard choice, but it is a bit of an investment.

I am curious if anyone has used third-party alternatives like Vello or Neewer on their 80D or 90D. I am specifically concerned about the shutter button responsiveness and how the build quality feels compared to the camera body itself. Does anyone have a favorite that doesn't feel like cheap plastic? Which specific grip do you think offers the best reliability for the price?

tbh I get the struggle with the official price tag. For a budget pick that actually feels decent, I suggest looking into these:

> Honestly, Im disappointed with third-party stuff. Totally agree with the above! i've tried many over the years and honestly the electronics in generic ones are kinda scary. basically, the Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip has better voltage regulation so it wont mess with ur battery communication. cheap plastic is one thing, but bad circuitry can actually damage the camera. if the official price is too high, maybe check for a used one?? gl!

For your situation, I gotta warn you: avoid cheaper third-party grips. Unfortunately, Ive had issues with the build quality of Vello and Neewer.

  • Canon: Professional standard but expensive.
  • Vello: Shutter button is mushy.
  • Neewer: Feels reallyyy hollow. Honestly, Im disappointed with third-party stuff. They dont match the 90D body and can cause power drain. Stick with the official one... peace.

Jumping in here because i've had such bad luck with these in the past. Basically, the thread so far is saying skip the super cheap stuff like Neewer, maybe try Pixel or Meike for a budget win, but the Canon is king for weather sealing. Unfortunately, my experience with third-party stuff has been kinda shaky... literally. The mounts just arent as tight as they should be and start to wobble after a few months of heavy use. If you want a couple more brands to compare that havent been mentioned:

Regarding what #3 said about the struggle with the official price, i totally get it. Ive been shooting with 80D and 90D bodies for years and have tested several configurations. If you want reliability without paying the full Canon tax, you have to be really picky about the build.

  • Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip: This is the standard for weather sealing. If you shoot in the rain or dust, dont risk third-party stuff. The buttons feel exactly like the body.
  • Vivitar Pro Series Multi-Power Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D: This is a decent sleeper pick. Pros: The rubber texture matches the 90D pretty well. Cons: The secondary shutter button has a louder click than the main camera button.
  • DSTE Pro BG-E14 Vertical Battery Grip: Reliable electronics for the price. Pros: Usually comes with a wireless remote. Cons: The battery tray feels a bit thin compared to OEM. If you are doing paid events, honestly... just hunt for a used Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip. The electronics in the official one are just better when you are on the clock. Third-party ones are fine for casual shooting tho.
