Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Canon 7D Mark II for a few months now, mostly focusing on high-speed sports and some local wildlife. I absolutely love the autofocus system, but I’m finding that my hand gets pretty cramped after a couple of hours, especially when I’m using my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I really think a battery grip would help balance out the weight and make those vertical shots much more comfortable.

I’ve been looking at the official Canon BG-E16, but man, that price tag is a bit steep! I’m curious if any of you have experience with third-party brands like Vello or Neewer. Since the 7D Mark II is such a rugged, weather-sealed beast, I’m worried about whether a cheaper grip would compromise that protection or if the buttons and joystick will feel mushy compared to the camera body. I also want to make sure the frame rate doesn't take a hit when using a non-OEM grip.

Is the build quality of the Canon version really worth the extra money, or are there reliable alternatives that won't fail me in the field? What battery grip are you currently using on your 7DII, and would you recommend it for heavy use?

honestly, try the Meike MK-7DRII Battery Grip:
- keeps 10fps burst
- solid weather sealing
basically identical to the oem version but way cheaper. its a total bargain for sports. gl!

dude, i basically went with the Vello BG-C12 Battery Grip for Canon 7D Mark II to save cash. it totally hits that 10fps burst... honestly, it's kinda amazing value for $60, iirc!!

In my experience shooting sports for over a decade, I've learned the hard way that cutting corners on grips usually ends in regret. For your situation, here is what I suggest: 1. Just get the official Canon brand. Honestly, I've tried many third-party options over the years, and they just dont hold up to heavy professional use.
2. The weather sealing is the biggest deal-breaker. The 7DII is basically a tank, but off-brand grips like Neewer or Vello often lack proper gaskets. If youre out in the rain, do you really wanna risk a short circuit??
3. Button feel is sooo much better on the real deal. Third-party joysticks usually feel kinda mushy and cheap compared to the actual camera body. Basically, save up for the OEM version. It’s lowkey worth the extra cash for the peace of mind and that consistent frame rate... gl!
