Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS 6D Mark II, and I'm absolutely loving the jump to full-frame for my landscape work. However, I’ve quickly realized that my current setup feels a bit 'incomplete' when I’m out in the field. I’m planning a few hiking trips to the mountains next month, and I want to make sure I have the right gear to really push this sensor to its limits.
I’m specifically looking for advice on a few things. First, since the 6D Mark II has that handy articulating screen, I’m struggling to find an L-bracket that doesn’t block the screen's movement—has anyone found a specific model that works well? Also, I’m torn between investing in a solid square filter system for long exposures versus just getting high-quality circular ND filters. Given the camera's dynamic range, I feel like I might need those graduated ND filters to balance the sky more effectively during sunrise and sunset.
I have a budget of about $500–$700 to round out my kit. Aside from a sturdy tripod, what would you consider the absolute 'must-have' accessories for a 6D Mark II landscape shooter to get professional-looking results?
Soooo just catching up on this thread and honestly, you're gonna LOVE the 6DII in the mountains!! Before I give advice, curious about one thing: what lenses are u actually planning to take? Basically, do they all have the same filter thread size or are they all different?? I ask cuz if ur budget is $500-$700, that money can disappear FAST. I'm still kinda new to this but I learned the hard way that buying high-quality circular NDs for every lens is a total money pit. Plus, square filters are literally essential if u want to use graduated NDs to balance the sky without making the mountains look dark... it’s a game changer for professional looks! The NiSi mentioned earlier is amazing, but if u want to save some cash for hiking gear, check out the Haida M10 Filter Holder Kit. The drop-in system is so fast when ur hands are freezing lol. For the bracket, I actually used the Sunwayfoto PCL-6DII Custom L-Bracket for Canon 6D Mark II which is super budget-friendly and still lets the screen flip out mostly. But yeah, let me know about the lenses first so we can figure out the best value setup!! peace
So basically, I went through this exact same thing with my 6DII! Here is what worked for me: * SmallRig L-Bracket for Canon EOS 6D Mark II 2144 - I love this one cuz the side plate actually slides out so the screen can still flip! * NiSi V7 100mm Filter Holder Kit - Seriously, go square. It's way better for grads when shooting mountain peaks.
* Canon RS-80N3 Remote Switch - Kinda essential for those sharp long exposures. Good luck! 👍
> I’m struggling to find an L-bracket that doesn’t block the screen's movement Re: "Can vouch for this" - if you want real precision, check out the Kirk Enterprise Solutions BL-6D2 L-Bracket. The CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum is just amazing and it allows for way better screen clearance than the cheap universal ones. It is rock solid! For filters, I did a deep dive into the specs between the Kase K9 100mm Slim Filter Holder Kit and the Lee Filters LEE100 Holder Kit. The Kase system wins for me because of that 90mm magnetic CPL. It sits closer to the lens which basically eliminates light leaks and vignetting on wide-angle glass. Plus, the Kase Wolverine 100mm x 150mm Soft Grad ND 0.9 is actually shockproof! Literally dropped mine on a rock once and it didnt even scratch... total lifesaver in the mountains. Ngl, square filters are the way to go for grads. Circular ones are just too limiting for horizon placement. Go for the Kase kit if you want the best tech! The light transmission data on that Wolverine glass is fantastic too and the color neutrality is basically perfect.
Same setup here, love it
