Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to a Canon 6D Mark II, and I'm absolutely loving the jump to full-frame. However, I've quickly realized that my old, lightweight travel tripod just isn't cutting it anymore. The 6DII paired with my 24-105mm f/4L lens feels quite front-heavy, and I’m genuinely concerned about it tipping over or vibrating during long exposures. I’m starting to get more into landscape and some light astrophotography, so having a rock-solid foundation is my top priority right now.
I'm also looking for a reliable remote shutter release. I know the 6DII has the Canon Camera Connect app, but I find it a bit fiddly to use in the dark or when I'm wearing gloves. I've been looking at the wired RS-80N3, but I'm curious if a wireless option would be better. My main concern is finding something that doesn't interfere with the articulating screen, as I use that a lot for low-angle shots.
I’ve done some digging online, but the sheer volume of gear is a bit overwhelming. I'm hoping to keep the total for both items under $300. Does anyone have specific tripod and remote shutter recommendations that they’ve found work perfectly with the 6D Mark II?
ngl I've had gear literally break using flimsy stuff, it was a total nightmare. You might find this useful—check out 'The Digital Picture' site, but unfortunately most budget gear is just not as good as expected, so I'd grab the Benro Mach3 2 Series Aluminum Tripod TMA28A and Vello ShutterBoss II Wired Remote Switch for Canon with N3. Pro tip: Hang your bag on the tripod hook for extra stability! gl!
oh man, I totally feel u on the 6DII being front-heavy with that 24-105mm. I actually had a super scary moment where my old setup almost ate dirt during a long exposure... honestly, it was traumatizing lol. To keep u under that $300 mark, here's what I've found basically works best: 1. Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB 100 Aluminum Tripod with SBH-100 Ball Head vs Manfrotto MT190XPRO3 Aluminum 3-Section Tripod. The Vanguard is basically a beast for the price. It's super stable for landscape, tho it is a bit heavy to lug around. Unfortunately, the Manfrotto is great but usually ends up being way more expensive once u buy a decent head, which kinda blows your budget.
2. Canon BR-E1 Bluetooth Remote Control vs Canon RS-80N3 Remote Switch. Seriously, skip the wired one. I found the wire always gets in the way of the flip-out screen. The Bluetooth remote is way more practical for those low-angle shots u mentioned, and it wont dangle in the wind! Anyway, definitely go for the Vanguard setup. It's solid enough for some light astro without breaking the bank. gl!

Basically, everyone's pointed out the stability issues with that lens combo. Aluminum is cheaper but heavy, tho carbon fiber dampens vibrations better for astro. I'd be cautious with the center column on those cheaper Vanguard or Benro models; it's a weak point for long exposures.
