Hey folks! I’m looking to upgrade my 7D Mark II setup for some indoor sports and wedding work. I need a flash with fast recycle times and solid High-Speed Sync (HSS) performance. Should I stick with Canon Speedlites, or are the Godox options reliable enough for this body? What’s your go-to flash?
sooo i've been using my 7D Mark II for like forever and i totally get the struggle. honestly i've had some reallyyy disappointing experiences where my gear just didn't perform like i wanted during big events... it's literally the worst feeling ever. i'm still kinda figuring out the technical side of things myself, but i've tried a couple of different setups over the years. here's how i see the main options for you: - Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT: it's super reliable and the hss is basically flawless on a canon body. but unfortunately it's sooo expensive and it eats aa batteries so fast which is just not as good as i expected for pro work.
- Godox V1-C Flash for Canon: the recycle speed is actually amazing because of that li-ion battery pack. it's way cheaper too, but i guess the build quality feels a bit 'plastic-y' compared to the canon? i'm not really sure if it'll last as long in the long run. anyway... i'd say go canon if you want to be safe, but godox is great for the speed. hope that helps!! 👍
If you are shooting weddings or sports on the 7D Mark II, I would suggest being very careful about heat management. When you are pushing HSS for long periods, some units might thermal throttle or just fail entirely. Gear fails sometimes. For long-term reliability, I generally prefer gear that is built to take a beating and wont quit on you.
> are the Godox options reliable enough for this body? I went through this last year. I guess Godox V860III-C for Canon beats Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II on speed, tho Godox V1-C Flash for Canon has better light. V860III worked well for me!!
I totally agree that going the Godox route is the way to go for the 7D Mark II, especially since the official gear is just so pricey nowadays. Honestly, I'm always a bit *nervous* about third-party gear failing during a wedding, so I usually look for things that have a proven track record. If you're trying to save some cash but still want that HSS reliability, you might want to look at: * Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon: It's way cheaper than the V series because it uses AA batteries. I actually prefer this because if a proprietary lithium battery dies, you're stuck, but you can find AAs anywhere.
* Godox X2T-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger: If you're doing sports, getting the flash off-camera is safer for your hot shoe anyway. I've heard some stories about the hot shoe mount on the 7D II being a bit tight with certain brands, so just be careful when sliding them in. I'm not 100% sure if the recycle time is exactly the same as the lithium versions, but for the price difference, it's basically close enough for me. Anyway, hope that helps!
Re: "Solid advice 👍" - totally agree!! its awesome seeing everyone jump on the Godox train for the 7D Mark II. basically the consensus here is that the V860III and TT685II are the sweet spots for performance vs price. honestly tho if you really wanna go the budget/DIY route i love hunting for used gear. you can snag a used Canon Speedlite 580EX II for next to nothing these days and it is an absolute beast for weddings!! if you need those crazy fast recycle times for sports just grab a Godox PB960 Flash Power Pack to plug into it. seriously... it makes a huge difference and you'll save hundreds compared to buying the new EL series or even the 600EX. i've used this combo forever and the HSS is rock solid! definitely worth looking at the used market if you want pro power on a shoestring budget.
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
Solid advice 👍
