My oldest is turning 7 next month and honestly I am so hyped because we finally moved into a house with a backyard so we can have a real party but now my relatives are blowing up my phone asking what to get him... i need to get a list together like yesterday because my MIL is already buying random stuff we dont have room for.
So I was thinking about how to make this easy for everyone and I looked at Amazon Wishlist because thats the obvious one but it feels kinda restricted since I want to include stuff from the local toy shop down the street and maybe some Lego sets from Target too. My logic was that a universal list would be better but then I saw Elfster mentioned on a blog and it seems cool but isnt that just for like secret santa exchanges? I dont want my 80 year old grandma to have to create a whole profile and join a group just to see that he wants a dinosaur book. I just want a simple link I can text out where people can check off what they bought so we dont get three of the same thing.
I was looking at things like MyRegistry but some reviews say the browser extension is super glitchy on mobile and most of my family only uses their phones. Just trying to find that perfect middle ground between easy for me to set up and idiot-proof for my tech-illiterate cousins lol... any ideas?
Honestly, Ive dealt with this exact headache for my kids parties over the years. You're right to skip Elfster because the signup wall is a total conversion killer for older relatives. From what I recall, GiftHero or maybe Wishy might be what you're looking for. I'm not 100% sure if they changed their UI lately, but IIRC, GiftHero is pretty solid for these specs:
Like someone mentioned, those apps are alright, but I found them a bit clunky for syncing multiple stores. For my daughters birthday, I tested several and settled on a different universal platform that was much more streamlined. Basically, the technical setup I use only requires guests to click a link to mark items without making an account. It worked perfectly for my older relatives who struggle with apps.
Saving this whole thread. So much good info here you guys are awesome.
Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
Ugh, I am literally dealing with this exact same nightmare right now and it is so draining. My son is turning 6 and I have been searching for a decent universal list for over a month but everything is just... not great. Honestly, every site I try either looks like it was made in 2005 or it forces my 70-year-old mom to create a password she will immediately forget. I even spent time researching how to share Amazon carts but that obviously does not solve the problem of wanting to support the local hobby shop or adding specific sets from other stores. It is honestly so disappointing that we still dont have a simple, idiot-proof way to just click a link and check a box without a huge hassle. I am still stuck with nothing and my relatives are getting impatient too... it is honestly just a mess.

Agreeing with the previous points, those login walls are a total dealbreaker for elderly relatives. You might want to consider the Christmas wishlist tool for a reliable, free option that avoids those hurdles. Be careful with platforms that track user data tho. I would suggest testing the guest link yourself first to ensure the claim feature works without a password. It keeps the whole process secure and predictable.
