So I'm trying to start this video project for my cousins wedding business thing next month and I want it to look like those fancy commercials or high-end movies but man I am so lost. I've been looking at lights online and everything that says professional is like thousands of dollars which is just insane to me because it's just a lightbulb right?
My logic was that I could just buy some cheap construction lights from the hardware store but then I read that makes everything look yellow or green and flickers on camera and now I'm just annoyed. I have maybe $450 tops to spend on a whole kit and I need it to look cinematic whatever that actually means. I saw these LED panels on Amazon but some people say they are trash and others say they're great and my brain is melting trying to figure out what a CRI even is or why I need a softbox.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but is there any way to get that expensive high-end look without selling a kidney? Like is there a specific brand that is cheap but actually good for beginners who dont know what they are doing? I just want the skin to look nice and not like a zombie under a streetlamp...
I've been really satisfied with the Smallrig RC120D lately. It works well and definitely wont break the bank.
I would suggest looking at the Godox SL60IID or the Amaran 60x for your budget. You might want to consider that hardware store lights flicker badly on camera. Make sure to check for a CRI rating of at least 95 so skin tones look healthy. Id be careful with cheap panels since they are usually too dim. Definitely grab a Bowens mount softbox... its the secret to that soft cinematic glow.
What kinda venue are you working with exactly? I've used many brands over the years and you cant go wrong with anything from Nanlite.
