I can warmly recommend Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM for Canon EOS R6 Mark II. The controls are user-friendly The controls are intuitive and easy to use.

My personal experience: I've tested various lenses, and Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM was superior in all tests. The image quality remains excellent even in challenging lighting conditions, which is important for professional work. Very good future-proofing through modern technology and reliable performance.

Honestly, I've been lurking on a few gear review sites lately and noticed some other zooms that get mentioned all the time for the R6 II that haven't come up here yet. I'm still kind of a newbie with all the technical specs, but from what I've gathered from the community, these two are reallyyy popular: * Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM - This one seems like the "gold standard" for an all-arounder. It has constant f/4 aperture and the Nano USM motors are supposed to be basically silent, which is great if you ever do video. * Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM - If you want more reach on a budget, I saw a lot of people saying this is a total steal. It's super lightweight (only about 635g I think?) so it wont hurt your neck after a long day. I'm not 100% sure about the low light performance on the cheaper ones tho? I guess it depends if you're shooting outside mostly. The R6 Mark II has such a good sensor that it might not even matter that much tbh. Hope that helps with your decision!

Coming back to this thread after a bit, and honestly, I am surprised no one has mentioned the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM yet. I have been shooting with it on my R6 II for a few months now and it is basically a prime-killer. The f/2 aperture throughout the range is pretty incredible for subject separation, though it is definitely a beast to carry around for a full day. For a great resource, I always point people toward the lens comparison tools on The-Digital-Picture. It is basically the industry standard for looking at side-by-side ISO resolution charts to see how these zooms actually perform at different focal lengths and apertures. It helps take the guesswork out of these expensive decisions. Quick tips for the R6 II:

  • Look into the weight distribution; some of these heavier RF zooms feel much better if you add the battery grip to balance the body.
  • If you do video, check the focus breathing specs on those technical sites before you buy, as some zooms are way better than others for rack focusing.

To add to the point above: while the standard f/2.8 zooms are excellent, I have to respectfully disagree with the idea that they are the only top-tier choices for the R6 II! Based on my years in the field, I think exploring specialized focal lengths offers much more value for specific styles.

  • Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM: This is a fantastic choice for landscape work. The 14mm wide end is significantly more useful than 15mm for tight spaces, and the weight savings over the f/2.8 version are amazing! It is super sharp across the frame.
  • Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM: For sports or wildlife, this lens is absolutely superior to a 70-200. The reach is incredible and the image stabilization works flawlessly with the R6 II body. Truly a world-class piece of glass!
  • Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM: If you want something lighter and more affordable, this is a total hidden gem. Tbh, the autofocus speed on the R6 II with this lens is lightning fast and it is so light you can carry it all day. Honestly, building a kit with these specialized zooms has been a total game changer for my workflow... definitely worth considering over the standard options everyone else is using!

So much high-end glass mentioned here! @Reply #12 - good point, definitely worth saving this thread. But tbh, my wallet hurts just looking at some of these prices haha. We have covered everything from the chunky f/2.8 L zooms to the super wide stuff, but lets talk about the unsung heroes that wont break the bank! Last summer I went on a hiking trip and decided to leave my heavy f/2.8 zooms at home. I took a chance on some of the non-L stuff and honestly? The R6 II sensor is so good it makes them look fantastic!

  • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM: You can find this for like 400 bucks. It is tiny and the center sharpness is actually amazing for the price.
  • Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM: This lens is a total game changer for wildlife on a budget. Super lightweight and the AF is snappy!
  • Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM: This is my favorite one-lens solution. It is so versatile for travel. The L glass is nice if you are a pro, but for most of us, these options get you 90 percent of the way there for a fraction of the cost. Definitely give them a look!

For Canon EOS R6 Mark II I would also check the autofocus performance. Do you need fast AF for action shots?
