I just grabbed the R7 for my Costa Rica trip in two weeks but I'm totally stressing over the glass. My logic was the RF 100-500 is the gold standard but I'm worried it's too slow for the jungle canopy. Should I just adapt my old EF 100-400 II or is the 200-800 better for small birds?
Sadly, my Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM was a total letdown in the thick canopy. I struggled so much. Just adapt your Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM for that extra light.
Honestly, after years of shooting in rainforests, light is always your biggest enemy. You need reliability when youre miles from a repair shop. Ive tried many setups and the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM is phenomenal, but that f/7.1 can really hurt you under a thick canopy. In my experience, sticking with what you know works is usually the safest play. My specific recommendations for this environment:
