I finally picked up the Canon R8 because I needed something light for b-roll but man this thing is tiny in my hands lol. It feels like Im gonna drop it half the time when Im trying to do handheld pans. Im doing a small wedding shoot for a friend in Chicago in about two weeks and I really need to rig this thing up with a top handle and a monitor before then.

Ive been looking at two main options but I cant decide. The SmallRig 4152 is the obvious choice because its like 60 bucks and I can get it on Amazon tomorrow but then I saw the 8Sinn cage and it looks way more low profile and sleek. The problem is the 8Sinn is almost double the price and Im worried it wont get here in time. I also looked at the Tilta one but Ive heard their mounting points can be weird with non-Tilta accessories sometimes?

My budget is pretty tight, trying to keep the cage under 80 dollars if possible so I have money left for the actual handle. Is the SmallRig good enough for basic stuff or am I gonna regret not spending the extra cash on something more premium like the 8Sinn? I just dont want the camera twisting inside the cage while Im moving around...

Honestly, just go with the SmallRig 4152 Camera Cage for Canon EOS R8! I use it and it is amazing for the price.

  • SmallRig: Two points of contact so it never twists, plus it fits the budget perfectly!
  • 8Sinn: Definitely looks sleek but honestly not worth double the cash.
  • Tilta: Way too many proprietary issues with other gear. Grab the SmallRig and dont look back!

Re: "I've dealt with that tiny camera body issue..." - yeah, the R8 is basically a toy in terms of size. Honestly, I've been pretty disappointed with the budget cage market lately. Most of these cheap ones feel like they were made in a hurry and some dont even line up with the mounting pins properly. I had a really bad experience with a generic cage last month where the camera kept twisting despite the tightening screw, which is basically a nightmare when youre doing handheld pans like you mentioned. If you want something that actually stays put without breaking the bank before your Chicago trip, you should check out the Falcam F22 & F38 Quick Release Camera Cage for Canon EOS R8. I moved over to their system recently and honestly, the quick release ecosystem is a game changer for weddings. It is right at the top of your 80 dollar budget but the build quality is significantly better than the basic stuff. Unfortunately, the cheaper cages usually skip the anti-twist pins or they use cheap metal that strips easily. Just a heads up tho, the R8 battery life is pretty terrible, so whatever cage you pick, make sure it doesnt obstruct that battery door at all. I tried a generic one that made swapping batteries a 2-minute ordeal and I almost missed the first kiss at a ceremony because of it... total disaster. The Falcam fits like a glove and keeps things slim so it still fits in a small bag.

I've dealt with that tiny camera body issue before and honestly, in my experience, the Neewer Full Camera Cage for Canon R8 is a sleeper hit. I used their gear on a frantic wedding shoot last summer and it stayed rock solid. It is usually well under your 80 dollar budget and has multiple locking points to stop annoying twisting. TL;DR: Grab the Neewer cage; its super sturdy and has a built-in Arca-Swiss plate.
