so i just pre-ordered the r5ii and i'm trying to figure out the cage situation before it shows up next week. i'm stuck between the basic smallrig one and the new kondor blue cage. my logic was that the smallrig is cheap and i already have some of their handles lying around but the kondor blue looks way more robust for handheld work. i'm doing a documentary project in seattle next month so i need something that wont fail on me. the kondor is like double the price though. then there is the tilta... but i heard their shipping can be slow lately. is the extra money for the kondor blue actually worth it for the better build or should i just stick with what i know?

Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in because i have spent years rigging out R-series bodies for high-stakes field work. If youre doing a documentary in a rainy or unpredictable environment like Seattle, you need to look at how the cage actually locks to the body. In my experience, the cheaper cages can sometimes have a bit of twist when youre using heavy glass or side handles. The Kondor Blue Canon EOS R5 II Cage Space Gray uses multiple points of contact which is huge for stability. Here is why the extra spend might actually be a technical necessity for your doc:

  • Anti-twist pins: The Kondor Blue Canon EOS R5 II Cage uses a specific locating pin system that prevents the camera from rotating inside the cage during high-vibration handheld shots.
  • Integrated NATO Rails: Unlike some basic options, the higher-end cages build NATO rails directly into the frame. This reduces the number of parts that can vibrate loose in the field.
  • Battery Access: Some cheaper frames make it a pain to swap batteries quickly. The R5 II is a power-hungry beast, so youll be swapping constantly.
  • Port Protection: For docs, youll probably be running a monitor or external mic. The SmallRig Canon EOS R5 Mark II Cage 4703 is decent, but Kondors cable clamps are technically superior in terms of strain relief for those fragile micro-HDMI ports. Basically, if you have the budget, the build quality on the Kondor Blue stuff is noticeably better for long-term durability. If you want a middle ground, look at the Tilta Full Camera Cage for Canon R5 II Black. Its got a great ecosystem, even if shipping is a bit slow. Let me know if you need help with specific bolt-on layouts!

Honestly im happy with the SmallRig Canon EOS R5 Mark II Cage 4703. It works well and reuses your handles perfectly.

  • super cheap
  • solid build No complaints here.
