Which battery grip should I actually buy for my Canon 90D because Im stuck choosing between the official Canon BG-E14 and the Neewer version?
I just upgraded to the 90D for a big wedding shoot I have coming up in three weeks and Im so excited but I definitely need the extra juice and vertical shutter. The Canon brand one is like $150 which feels crazy high right now after buying lenses but Ive heard the Neewer or Vello ones might have connection issues. Is the official one worth the massive price jump or should I save the $100 for more SD cards? Need to decide fast...
Looked at the build data before buying. The Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D 80D 90D uses glass-fiber reinforced polycarbonate with sealing gaskets that match the 90D specs. I used a Vello BG-C10 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D once but the tolerances were off so the shutter button felt mushy. Quick tip: clean the grip pins with isopropyl alcohol before mounting to avoid communication errors.
@Reply #1 - good point! Reliability matters most. Grab the Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip but definitely:
jumping in a day late but I just had to share my experience because I am obsessed with the 90D! I tried to save money once with a budget grip during a long sports weekend and it was a total nightmare... the shutter button would lag and I missed some amazing shots. heres how I see the options after trying a few:
Honestly, Ive tried the cheap third-party grips over the years to save a few bucks, but I always regret it. For a big wedding, you cant risk the shutter button failing or the battery connection dropping out mid-ceremony. I had a Neewer Battery Grip for Canon EOS 90D once that felt like cheap plastic and lost power randomly. Just bite the bullet on the Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D 80D 90D. The build quality is way better.
Building on the earlier suggestion, I been thinking about your 90D setup for that wedding in a few weeks. I remember shooting my first big event with a budget grip—actually it was a Vivitar Battery Grip for Canon EOS 70D 80D 90D I picked up on sale—and it worked perfectly until the reception when the command wheel started skipping values. Kinda stressful when you are trying to adjust exposure fast under changing lights. Before you commit though, are you planning on using genuine Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery packs or third-party ones? I ask because some grips are way more finicky with third-party battery communication than others, and the last thing you want is a battery not recognized error during the vows. Quick tip: always carry the AA battery tray that comes with these grips in your bag just in case. Saved my skin once when my chargers failed overnight. Also, if you go third-party, maybe check out the Pixel BG-E14 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D as a middle ground... it felt a bit sturdier than the Neewer one in my hands, though still not quite at that Canon level.
Saw this earlier but just now getting a chance to reply... building on the earlier suggestion, I actually found myself pretty disappointed with the latest Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D 80D 90D I picked up. For that price, I expected it to feel like a tank, but it honestly feels a bit hollower and more plasticky than the ones Canon used to make back in the day. I'd actually disagree with the idea that the official one is the ONLY way to go if you're on a budget. If you're handy, you can make almost any grip reliable. Quick DIY tip: if you get a cheaper one and it feels a bit loose, just put a tiny strip of gaffer tape on the mounting plate to act as a gasket. It stops the tiny micro-wiggles that cause most of those connection drops people complain about. Also, clean the pins with a pencil eraser to keep the signal clean. Since you're doing a wedding, maybe skip the overpriced grip and grab ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold cards instead? Having fast, reliable storage is gonna matter way more than a fancy handle. If you need extra juice, I've had zero issues with the Watson LP-E6NH Li-Ion Battery Pack as a solid backup to the OEM ones. You got this, dont stress too much!
