honestly im so fed up with the built-in flash on my Rebel T7 because it just washes everything out and makes my photos look like total trash. my logic was to just stick with what the camera came with but im trying to do a small indoor shoot for a friend in Portland next week and its just not working out. so i was thinking about getting the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT but then i saw a bunch of people online talking about Godox and now im just stuck. my budget is like 150 bucks max because im a student and i just need something that actually works and doesnt feel cheap. whats the best move here...
To add to the point above: I totally hear you on the Godox stuff, they're great, but I actually have to disagree a bit for the T7 specifically! You really gotta be careful because Canon actually removed the center sync pin on many T7 models. This makes third-party flashes like Godox a bit flaky if you dont have the exact right version. Since you're a student and this shoot is so soon, I'd suggest the Canon Speedlite EL-100 Compact Flash. It is amazing! Staying right under your $150 budget, this thing works 100% of the time because it is native gear. I love it because its super compact but still lets you bounce light off the ceiling... your photos will look a million times better! This is a fantastic little unit and basically the safest move for your wallet right now... definitely worth it!
Seriously, go with Godox! The Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon is a total beast for the price.
Big if true
Regarding what #3 said about "Big if true" - it is a total nightmare in reality. I remember my first time hitting that wall... I had a third-party unit that just sat there dead while I was trying to look like a pro. Over the years, I've realized that the T7's lack of a center pin is basically Canon's way of forcing you into their ecosystem, which is super frustrating for students. I actually disagree with the idea that a small compact flash is gonna cut it for a real indoor shoot. In my experience, those tiny units usually lack the power to bounce light effectively off high or dark ceilings, and youll just end up with a similar harsh look that you're trying to avoid. Before I suggest some other brands that actually worked around the pin issue, I gotta ask:
