just snagged an R8 and im so stoked for my NYC trip next week! budget is tiny now so im torn between the RF 50mm 1.8 and the 28mm pancake. the 50 is a steal but is the 28mm better for cramped city streets? which one is the move for a broke street photographer??

Saw this while scrolling today. I spent years shooting a Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM before realizing I missed too many wide shots. The 50mm is decent for subject isolation, but the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is technically better for cramped NYC streets. A used Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is a solid middle ground too. Quick tip: use f/8 so you dont miss focus when snapping fast. Let me know if you need more help!

To add to the point above: grab a used Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM. Just watch out for lens flare between those skyscrapers, it might ruin shots if you arent careful.

In my experience, the wider focal length is the move for NYC. I once shot the subway with a 50mm and it was a disaster because I couldnt back up enough.

  • 50mm is too tight for skyscrapers
  • Wide glass captures the massive crowds
  • Narrow lenses force you into traffic Honestly, the 50mm feels like a trap in cramped cities. Youll miss half the scene.
