Just got my R5 Mark II for my trip to Maine in two weeks and honestly i am so lost with all these options. I spent most my money on the camera so I only got about 1300 left for a lens.

whats the one zoom lens that works for everything? sorry i really dont know anything about this stuff...

Since you are heading to Maine and have about 1300 left, you really should look at the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Honestly, I have been using this one for a while and I am beyond satisfied with how it handles the 45MP sensor on the R5 series. The technical specs are exactly what you need for an all-arounder. You get a constant f/4 aperture, which is great because your exposure wont jump around when you zoom in on a lighthouse or something... it just makes life easier. The Nano USM motor inside is basically silent and incredibly fast, which works well if you decide to try the video features on that new Mark II. Maine weather can be unpredictable, but this lens has the L-series weather sealing, so no complaints there when it gets misty or dusty. It has 5 stops of optical stabilization, and when paired with your bodys IBIS, you can hand-hold shots at some pretty slow shutter speeds without it getting blurry. Its right at the edge of your budget at $1299, but its the most versatile piece of glass for a single-lens trip. The edge-to-edge sharpness at 24mm is fantastic for those coastal landscapes, and 105mm gives you enough reach for some tighter portraits. If you have more questions about how the stabilization interacts with the sensor or whatever, just ask!

Wait, are you shooting wildlife or just landscapes? Maine has both so it matters.

It honestly drives me crazy how the industry has shifted lately. You drop a small fortune on a top tier body like the R5 II and then realize you are basically priced out of the glass that actually makes the sensor worth it. Its such a scam.

  • The fact that there is almost no middle ground anymore is just frustrating as hell.
  • Most affordable zooms are just plastic toys that look soft on high res sensors, so you are forced to pay the premium tax.
  • Companies keep raising prices while offering less in the box every single year. Honestly its ridiculous that you spend all your money on the tech and then get punished for not having another two grand lying around. Its a total mess for anyone who isnt a millionaire and just wants to take some decent photos on vacation.
