So I finally pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II but now I am freaking out because my trip to Kyoto is in three weeks and I have zero lenses. I spent way more than planned on the body so my budget is thin maybe $1500 max for glass. I am torn between getting the 24-105mm f4L because it's light or just biting the bullet for the 24-70mm 2.8 for low light stuff at night but its so heavy. Is the 24-105 gonna look soft on this sensor? I want one lens for street stuff and landscapes while we are hiking. Which one would you grab if you only had one spot in your bag...

Coming back to this... Kyoto is incredible but you really need to be careful about your back if you're walking all day. Since that R5 II sensor is so high-res, you might want to consider how much edge sharpness you're willing to sacrifice for convenience. If I were in your shoes with a strict $1500 limit, I would suggest a more methodical approach to your kit than just one massive lens.

  • Make sure to check the used market for a Canon RF 24-105mm f4L IS USM. You can usually find them for around $1000 which leaves you enough budget for a dedicated low-light option.
  • Be careful with the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM because while it handles the dark well, the weight is a serious liability when you're hiking up to the mountain temples. It gets heavy fast.
  • I would suggest adding the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM to your bag. It is incredibly light and bridges the gap for those night street scenes without breaking your budget. Honestly, the 24-105mm is the most versatile choice for travel, but you have to be realistic about f4 in the evening. I would grab the L-series zoom and a cheap prime. Just make sure to calibrate your expectations and test the glass before you leave... three weeks is a tight window and you wont want to be troubleshooting in Japan.

Honestly, I had issues with the Canon RF 24-105mm f4L IS USM being a bit soft at the edges on high-res sensors. Its unfortunately not as sharp as I expected for an L lens. But the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM is way over budget and heavy. Id grab the 24-105 for the range, even if it feels like a compromise. Youll need that reach in Kyoto.

To add to the point above: I've been very satisfied with my choice to prioritize reliability. I once bought glass that couldnt handle a high-res sensor and it was basically a waste of a trip. A few cautions:

  • Avoid rushing a purchase without testing
  • Check the weather sealing
  • Dont ignore weight for hiking Honestly, being methodical works well. I prefer gear that is proven.
