So I finally pulled the trigger on the R5 after saving up for like a year and I am so hyped to use it for this destination wedding I have in Maui next month. But honestly the storage situation is making my head spin a bit. I know I need a CFexpress Type B for the really heavy lifting like 8K raw stuff but I really want a solid SD card for the second slot to record proxies or even just 4K 60fps as a backup.
Ive been looking around and people keep mentioning the Sony Tough cards and the ProGrade V90s. I read on one forum that some V90 cards still get buffer errors when you try to do the high bitrates on the R5 though? And then someone else said the SanDisk ones are fine but get really hot during long takes. I dont want the camera to just stop mid-ceremony because the card couldnt keep up.
My budget is about 250 to 300 bucks for the SD cards specifically. Does anybody here actually use the R5 for heavy video and have a brand they swear by? I need something that wont throttle after ten minutes of 4K 120p or whatever. Is the V90 really necessary for everything or can I get away with V60 for backup if its just a lower bitrate? Its all a bit confusing...
The sustained write speeds on SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-II V90 128GB were so disappointing during a humid outdoor shoot I did. It couldnt maintain that 90MB/s minimum once it got warm. Such a letdown. Tip: ignore V60 cards if youre doing dual-slot recording because the buffer mismatch is real. Ngl, Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II V90 128GB is basically the only card I trust.
Like someone mentioned, V60 cards are a risky bet for the R5. I have been super satisfied with the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V90 128GB for my B-roll. It handles 4K 60fps without any weird hiccups. Quick question tho, are you shooting ALL-I or IPB for your backups? The camera gets picky about minimum write speeds even for proxies if the main slot is hitting high bitrates.
Ugh, I am literally going through the exact same thing right now. The R5 is such a beast but feeding it media is a total nightmare for the wallet. I have wasted so much cash on cards that supposedly met specs but just choked once things got warm. Just be super careful... if one slot lags, the whole camera stutters and ruins the take. It is so stressful.
