Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on the Canon EOS R5 a few months ago, and wow, the video quality is just incredible. Between the 8K RAW and those gorgeous 4K 120p slow-mo shots, it’s been a total game-changer for my production workflow. However, I’ve hit a bit of a wall lately regarding the built-in LCD screen.

While the flip-out screen is handy for quick vlogging-style shots, I’m finding it really difficult to nail critical focus when I'm shooting wide open at f/1.2 or f/1.8. Also, shooting outdoors in direct sunlight has been a bit of a nightmare; I can barely see my exposure levels, and the glare is often overwhelming. I’ve reached the point where I feel like I need a high-quality external monitor to really get the most out of this setup and ensure my shots are actually usable before I get back to the editing suite.

I’ve been eyeing the Atomos Ninja V+ since it seems to be the industry standard for the R5, particularly for recording ProRes RAW to offload some of that internal processing. But I’ve also heard great things about the SmallHD Indie 7 for its incredible color accuracy and the Portkeys monitors for their camera control features. I’m a bit torn on whether I should prioritize external recording capabilities or just go for the best possible display quality and brightness.

A few specific requirements I have in mind:
1. High brightness (at least 1000-2000 nits) so I can skip the bulky sun hood.
2. Something lightweight that won't throw off the balance of my DJI RS3 Pro gimbal.
3. A reliable HDMI connection that won't drop the signal when I'm pushing 4K 60p or 120p.

For those of you using the R5 for professional video work, what monitor are you currently rocking? Does recording externally actually help you manage the R5's overheating issues during long shoots, or is a standard monitor plenty? My budget is roughly $600 to $1,000. I'd love to hear your recommendations and if there are any specific mounting accessories you swear by!

Sooo, I've been shooting with the R5 since launch and I totally feel u on that focus struggle. Trying to hit focus at f/1.2 on that tiny screen is basically impossible lol. Honestly, adding a monitor was the best thing I ever did for my workflow, especially since the R5's micro-HDMI can be a bit finicky if you dont have a solid setup. First off, the educator bit: external recording actually DOES help with the R5's overheating. By offloading the heavy lifting of encoding to an external drive, the camera's internal processor stays way cooler, which is a lifesaver for long 4K 60p sessions. For your budget and needs, here's what I recommend:
* Atomos Ninja V+ 5.2" 8K HDMI H.265 Raw Recording Monitor - This is highkey the best choice for the R5. It handles 8K and 4K 120p signals perfectly and lets you record ProRes RAW. * SmallHD Indie 7 Smart Monitor - If you prioritize display quality, this is it. The PageOS software is literal magic for exposure tools, and it's 1000 nits bright.
* Portkeys LH7P 7-Inch High-Brightness Camera Control Monitor - This one is a sleeper hit. It's 1000 nits and has built-in wireless camera control for the R5, which is sooo useful when it's on a gimbal. For your DJI RS 3 Pro Gimbal Stabilizer, I'd grab the SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with Cold Shoe Mount 2905. It's super lightweight and wont mess with your balance. Just make sure you get a high-quality cable like the Atomos Coiled Full HDMI to Micro HDMI Cable cuz cheap ones will drop signal at 4K 60p. GL man!

Quick question - do you actually need external RAW recording or just better monitoring? Signal stability is HUGE, so definitely grab a Kondor Blue Braided 12-inch 8K HDMI 2.1 Cable for 120p!

sooo i had a moment to think about this... respectfully, id actually suggest a different approach. i spent a year rigging my R5 with a heavy recorder thinking i *needed* prores raw for everything. honestly? it was a total nightmare. my gimbal motors were literally screaming and my workflow slowed to a crawl cuz of the huge files. not to disagree, but i think ur overvaluing the external recording bit. the R5's internal 10-bit is already incredible. i'd go for a super bright monitor-only setup from a brand like portkeys or even a budget high-nit unit. you'll save tons of weight! WARNING: dont expect external recording to fix the overheating. the sensor still gets hot regardless! stick to a lightweight high-nit screen to nail that f/1.2 focus instead. TL;DR: skip the recorder, prioritize a 2000-nit display for gimbal work. your back will thank u lol.
