I just got a Rebel T6 for my trip to the Grand Canyon and I'm honestly so worried about scratching the lens. I read online that UV filters are a must for protection but then some experts say they cause ghosting and ruin shots especially on kit lenses so I'm totally torn. My logic was that a cheap filter is better than a broken lens but I dont want my photos looking like trash. I saw those cleaning kits on Amazon for 20 bucks but I'm scared the spray will strip the coating off. I only have about 50 dollars left so I was thinking should I buy one decent Hoya filter or just get a cheap bundle...
Checking back on this thread and honestly the kit lens situation changes things. Quick question though, are you just using the standard Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens that comes in the box or did you grab something else? The filter thread size is usually 58mm for that one but I want to be sure before you buy anything. Like someone mentioned, cheap glass is a lottery for image quality. Here is the technical breakdown on a couple decent options for your budget:
Yo, congrats on the T6! Totally get the anxiety about the Grand Canyon dust and scratches. Honestly, cheap filters can definitely mess with your contrast, so you might want to consider skipping the bottom-shelf bundles. They usually lack decent multi-coating which leads to those weird reflections and ghosting you heard about. Since you have 50 bucks, I would suggest spending it on one solid filter and a basic air blower instead of a massive kit filled with junk you wont use. Check these out:
Just catching up... ^ This. Also, in my experience, a hood is plenty for protection. Not 100% sure but it usually keeps glass safe. Dont worry about the spray, it wont strip coatings.
