Have Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for Canon EOS R1 in use. Works perfectly.

For Canon EOS R1 I would also check the autofocus performance. Do you need fast AF for action shots?

My experience: Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is perfect for Canon EOS R1. The reliability is very good The ergonomic design allows for comfortable handling.

Have you thought about the brand? For Canon EOS R1 different brands have advantages.

So I’ve been doing a lot of digging through community reviews lately because I’m always super cautious about spending a ton of money on glass that might not actually fit my workflow. Tbh, I was really worried about the weight of the f/2.8 lenses for a long trip, especially with a body like the R1. I ended up looking into the f/4 "travel" series instead to keep things more manageable. Here’s what I’ve been comparing based on the community feedback I found: * Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM: This seems like the safest bet for those wide travel shots. Most people in the groups say the edge-to-edge sharpness is solid, and I really value the weather sealing. I'm always kinda scared of a sudden downpour ruining the electronics, so the 'L' build gives me peace of mind.
* Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM: I was looking at this for a bit more reach. It’s basically the size of a soda can, which is wild. The community reviews mention it's super reliable for candid street stuff without being too flashy. I mean, I’m still sort of an intermediate user so I might be overthinking it, but I’d rather play it safe with lightweight, sealed gear than struggle with a heavy kit all day.

For Canon EOS R1 I would take Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM without hesitation. The weight is manageable and comfortable The fast autofocus makes everything feel responsive and accurate.

Long-term experience: Using Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for about a year and am thrilled. Have researched for a long time and this lens was the best choice. The image quality clearly exceeds my expectations. Very good price-performance ratio, can only recommend further.

I spent a few weeks trekking through the Swiss Alps last year and learned the hard way that weight matters, even when you have a flagship body. The R1 is built like a tank, so pairing it with lighter but high-perf glass is the way to go for travel. I switched to these two and never looked back:

  • Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM
  • Weighs just 540g. That extra reach to 14mm is a game changer for tight streets or mountain vistas. The 5.5 stops of IS (goes up to 7 with the R1 IBIS) makes handheld shots at dusk super easy.
  • Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
  • It is roughly the same size as a standard zoom when it is stowed away. I found the sharpness stays consistent throughout the zoom range, and the 0.6m minimum focus distance is actually really useful for detail shots. Tbh the f/4 aperture is fine since the R1 has such incredible high ISO performance. I rarely felt like I was missing out on the extra stop of light from the heavier 2.8 versions... plus it saves a ton of space in the bag. Its definitely worth looking into the f/4 line if you want to stay mobile.

Honestly if ur lugging around an R1 you probably want to save some weight elsewhere while keeping the image quality up. I mean, that body is already a total brick haha. For my last few trips I actually ditched the heavy L zooms and went with a super practical prime and a light tele setup. It works surprisingly well for real-world shooting that you can just walk around with.

  • Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM
  • Perfect for street and food shots, plus the macro is super handy for details.
  • Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM
  • This thing is crazy light for the massive reach it gives you. Tbh the autofocus on the R1 makes even these non-L lenses feel like pro glass. It is a solid way to keep ur kit manageable without breaking the bank after spending so much on the body lol. Who wants to carry a 10lb bag all day anyway?
