Which telephoto lens is best for Canon EOS R50? I'm unsure about the choice.

My setup: Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM for Canon EOS R50 - works great! The weight is manageable and comfortable The ergonomic design allows for comfortable handling.

Depends on what exactly you want to do with Canon EOS R50. Photography or also video work?

Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM - best option for Canon EOS R50 currently.

Am very satisfied with Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD for Canon EOS R50. The color rendition is impressive The low distortion is perfect for professional photography.

I have to disagree with the push for heavy L-series glass on such a small body. Like someone mentioned, the weight imbalance is a major technical flaw when youre using a camera that small. From a purely physics-based perspective, the center of gravity shifts way too far forward, making handheld shots a nightmare and putting unnecessary torque on the mount. Honestly, you should just stick to the native crop-sensor glass from Canon. Theyve engineered those specifically to match the APS-C sensor size and the lightweight build of your camera. Or, if you want more variety, just grab any of the newer mirrorless telephotos from Sigma or Tamron designed for smaller sensors. Going with gear built for full-frame sensors on an R50 is basically paying for glass you arent even using the edges of. Keep it light and stick to the APS-C specific lines.

Have you thought about the brand? For Canon EOS R50 different brands have advantages.

Saving this thread

Regarding what #9 said about Saving this thread - it is a smart move because there are a few different ways to look at this. Basically it comes down to:

  • Sticking with the high-end L glass which is always a safe bet for reliability.
  • Trying out some third party stuff if you want to save some cash, though i am not totally sure how the autofocus holds up. Honestly, i think some of these suggestions might be a bit heavy for the R50 body. IIRC someone told me that those big lenses can put a lot of strain on the mount if you arent careful. I am not 100 percent sure which one is the absolute best but i would personally go with something more balanced. Just depends on if you prioritize build quality or portability.

Regarding what #9 said about Saving this thread... I am right there with you!! Honestly, I have been losing sleep over this exact same dilemma with my own setup. It is such a struggle to find the right fit for such a small camera body like the Canon EOS R50! I have been doing a ton of research and there are some huge red flags I've noticed that everyone should be careful about:

  • Watch out for the weight imbalance! Putting a massive lens on this tiny body can actually put a lot of stress on the mount if you aren't careful.
  • Don't ignore the ergonomics. If the lens is three times the size of the camera, it becomes super awkward to change settings on the fly.
  • Be wary of total costs. Sometimes the adapter plus an older lens ends up being way bulkier than just sticking to native glass. I am so glad you posted this because I am literally going through the same thing right now... it is definitely a tricky balance to strike!

For Canon EOS R50, Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is an excellent choice. The reliability is very good The fast autofocus makes everything feel responsive and accurate.

Additionally, you should note: The latest generation offers significantly better image quality than previous models. Especially ideal for demanding photography and video work. Compatibility with Canon EOS R50 is very good, and the autofocus performance is also convincing.
