I just dropped a massive amount of money on the new R5 Mark II and honestly my hands are still shaking a bit from hitting the buy button. I have a huge wedding shoot coming up in Phoenix next month and the heat is already giving me anxiety just thinking about the camera body getting too hot during the ceremony. I know the Mark II has better cooling but I really want to move some of that heat away by using an external monitor and also just because my eyes arent what they used to be and that tiny back screen is impossible for checking critical focus when Im shooting 4K 120.
Ive been scouring YouTube and forums for days now. I keep seeing the Atomos Ninja Ultra being recommended because it can handle the ProRes RAW stuff but then I read a few comments on a Facebook group saying the fan noise is actually pretty loud and might get picked up by my on-camera mic if Im in a quiet church. Plus there is all this conflicting info about whether the Mark II actually needs the Ultra or if the regular Ninja V+ is enough since the HDMI port is still... well, its still that fragile micro-HDMI port which I am terrified of snapping off.
Then I looked at the Portkeys LH7P because people say the wireless control is amazing but I cant find any confirmation if it fully supports the Mark IIs new menu system or if Im gonna be stuck with a fancy screen that doesnt actually talk to my camera. My budget is capped at around $750 because the camera itself basically drained my savings and I still need to buy more CFexpress cards. I really need something bright enough for the desert sun but reliable enough that it wont flake out mid-vows.
Should I just stick with a high-brightness monitor like the Feelworld or Shinobi or is it actually worth the extra stress and cash to get a recorder like the Atomos for this specific camera body?
> I really need something bright enough for the desert sun but reliable enough that it wont flake out mid-vows. Tbh, if you just want to see what you're doing and keep the heat down, skip the Ninja. Ive been super satisfied with the Atomos Shinobi 5-inch 1000nit 4K HDMI Monitor and it works well for exactly what you need. No fan noise to worry about during a quiet ceremony and it draws way less power than a recorder, which helps keep everything a bit cooler. Quick tip: definitely grab a SmallRig HDMI and USB-C Cable Clamp for Canon R5 or a dedicated cage. Its a lifesaver for that tiny port. Also, for that Phoenix sun, make sure you use the sunhood. The 1000 nits is decent but desert light is no joke... anyway, keeping the setup simple is usually the best way to avoid mid-shoot meltdowns.
In my experience, reliability matters most in the heat. Be careful.
Quick reply while I have a sec. Ngl, I am so disappointed Canon kept that flimsy micro-HDMI on a camera this expensive. It is a total nightmare for reliability on professional shoots. I actually had issues with the Atomos fan noise being picked up by my shotgun mic during a quiet ceremony once, so I really wouldnt recommend the Ninja for wedding work. It is just too risky when the room goes silent for the vows. For that Phoenix sun, you basically need a sun-killer screen because 1000 nits honestly wont cut it. Here are a few alternatives that handle the brightness better:
Saved for later, ty!
Great info, saved!
^ This. Also, I've seen way too many people get sucked into the Atomos ecosystem for weddings when they dont actually need those RAW recording features. In my experience, if you're worried about that Phoenix sun, high nits and a solid sun hood are your only real friends. Since you're on a budget after that R5II purchase, I'd suggest a more practical, budget-conscious approach to keep things reliable:
