I leave for Japan in exactly two weeks and I am honestly panicking about my gear situation. I picked up the R50 a few months ago after using an old Rebel for years so I know my way around a camera but the kit lens that came with this thing... the 18-45mm is just not cutting it for what I need. Its way too slow in low light and the zoom range is honestly kind of a joke when you consider the crop factor. I want something versatile that wont break my back while I am walking 20k steps a day in Tokyo.
Here is what I am looking for:
I was looking at the 18-150mm but people say the image quality drops off at the end and the aperture is narrow. Then I thought about a prime like the 28mm or 35mm but I am worried about being stuck with one focal length for my only big trip this year. Is there a hidden gem I am missing or should I just suck it up and get the superzoom? I really need to order this by Monday so it gets here in time to test it...
Tbh you might want to consider these two specifically. Be careful with the superzoom in those dark Tokyo alleys tho.
Unfortunately, the 18-150mm is basically a letdown in low light. Just save your money and grab the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM instead. TL;DR: Fast glass beats a slow zoom.
I have been in that exact gear panic before. In my experience, wide is usually king in Japan because those shrines are tight. I would honestly grab the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM. Its basically weightless on an R50 and handles low light way better than your kit lens. I carried one for a week in Kyoto and it saved my back. Plus its super cheap, so you wont feel bad about the cost.
