Ive been shooting with full-frame bodies for years but the R8 size is a new challenge for my rig. I was thinking about a minimalist setup for a street project in Seattle next week, but every cage I find adds too much bulk to the grip. My logic was to keep it tiny. Maybe a half-cage exists?

Re: "I have shot with almost every Canon body..." - honestly, be careful with adding a full cage if you want to stay stealthy in Seattle. I would suggest:

I have shot with almost every Canon body over the years, and the R8 presents a unique challenge because its portability is the whole point. In my experience, you really have to be careful with cages that wrap too thick around the grip. For a street project where you need to stay light and stay within a budget, I recommend the SmallRig Cage for Canon EOS R8 4152. It is surprisingly slim and doesnt break the bank like some of the boutique brands out there. Tbh, I often find that these budget-friendly options are actually more ergonomic than the expensive ones for fast street work. It keeps the profile tight enough for a small bag while giving you the protection you need. If you find the full cage still feels too big, you could look for a generic L-bracket, but this SmallRig unit is the most methodical way to add mounting points without the bulk. Its basically the standard for a reason.

To add to the point above: you might want to be careful before dropping $60+ on a full cage if youre mainly worried about the grip size. I would suggest looking at more minimalist options that wont break the bank for a one-week project. Before I suggest a specific rig, could you clarify if you need cold shoe mounts for a mic or if you're just looking for extra protection? If you're on a budget, consider these:
