So Im heading to Japan in exactly 19 days and I am honestly kind of panicking about my light setup. Ive been a Canon shooter since the 40D days so I know my way around a camera but this R7 is my first mirrorless body without a built-in flash and its throwing me for a loop. I usually carry the 600EX-RT II but honestly putting that monster on top of the R7 feels ridiculous its so top heavy and literally doubles the size of the kit. I need something way smaller that wont scream tourist with expensive gear while I am doing street stuff in Tokyo at night.
I have been looking at the Canon EL-100 but I have heard some mixed things about the recycle times being slow and I am not even sure if it plays nice with the new multi-function shoe on the R7 or if I need one of those stupid AD-E1 adapters just to keep it weather sealed? Or maybe I should just ditch the first-party stuff entirely. I really dont want to spend more than 250 bucks because I already dropped way too much on lenses this month and my wife is gonna kill me if I keep adding to the bill.
I just need something for those quick fill-light moments or when I am doing some close-up macro work on the fly. Godox seems like a popular choice but I have had some weird reliability issues with their triggers in the past so I am a bit hesitant to trust them for a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Is there anything out there that is actually pocketable but still has a tilting head? I really hate that harsh direct look so being able to bounce off a low ceiling or even just a white wall is kind of a dealbreaker for me. My bag is already right at the weight limit for the airline so every single gram is starting to count. Does anyone actually use the tiny Canon ones for serious travel or am I better off looking at something like a Meike or some other third party brand? I just need something that isnt a total brick...
Japan is gonna be incredible!! Seriously, you are going to have the best time. I totally feel your pain with the 600EX-RT II on an R7... it basically turns the camera into a dumbbell lol. I actually went through this exact same panic before my trip to Osaka last year and settled on a few things that worked amazing.
ngl I'd be a bit careful with third party gear on that new R7 shoe. Since you're worried about Godox reliability, maybe look at the Meike MK-320 TTL Speedlite for Canon instead? Its very compact and has a decent tilt head for bouncing. Just make sure to test it thoroughly before you leave... those smaller pins can be delicate. Better safe than sorry when you're in Tokyo.
@Reply #2 - good point! That R7 shoe is compatible with most TTL flashes but sealing is the main issue if you dont use the adapter. Honestly, the EL-100 is kinda slow for serious work. Here are two better technical fits:
