im honestly so fed up with the built-in mic on my canon 80d. i spent all this money on a nice setup but the audio is just straight garbage. it picks up every single motor noise from the lens and there is this constant hissing that i cant get rid of in editing. its making my travel vlogs look so unprofessional and im just ready to throw the whole thing out the window. i need something reliable before my trip to colorado in three weeks and my budget is capped at like $180. what external microphone is actually recommended for the 80d that wont pick up all that background static?

Quick reply while I have a sec! I totally feel your pain with that 80D hiss! I did a trip to Zion and saved a ton of cash using a tiny setup that sounded pro. Quick question tho, are you vlogging at arms length or recording nature stuff?

  • Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone is a total beast.
  • Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone is amazing for travel. Both are way under your budget!

Honestly I was in the same boat till I got the Deity V-Mic D3 Pro Super-cardioid Directional Shotgun Microphone. That thing has been a lifesaver for my 80D setup.

  • Use the stepless gain knob to boost signal.
  • Keep your camera internal levels super low.
  • It kills the hiss so you dont have to fix it later. Im really satisfied with it and the battery life is just huge... basically outlasts my motivation to film lol.

Get the Rode VideoMic Pro Rycote On-Camera Shotgun Microphone! Its amazing for the 80D. Just set it to plus twenty dB and your hiss is gone. I love it!

I am dealing with this exact same audio interference issue on my rig right now! It is so frustrating because I have been troubleshooting the specific signal-to-noise ratio problems and internal preamp hiss for over four months without any luck. The inconsistency is just killing my workflow! I am looking for something with absolute technical reliability because every time I think I have the gain levels dialed in, that high-frequency static returns and ruins the take. Honestly I am just as lost as you are and still searching for a fix that actually works consistently!
