Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to a Canon EOS 90D and I've been loving the speed and the sensor quality so far. However, I'm starting to hit a wall with the built-in pop-up flash, especially when I'm shooting indoor events or trying to fill in shadows during outdoor portraits.
I really need something that supports full E-TTL because I don't always have time to fiddle with manual settings when things are moving fast. I've been looking at a few options but I'm torn between sticking with the native Canon Speedlites or going with a third-party brand like Godox or Yongnuo to save some money.
Here are a few specific things I'm looking for:
I've heard some people mention the Godox V1 or the Canon 430EX III-RT, but I'm curious if there are any specific compatibility issues or must-have features I should be aware of for this specific camera model. Does anyone have experience with these or a different favorite? What external flashes are you guys using with your 90D, and which one would you recommend as the best all-around choice?
Saw this thread earlier but just getting a chance to reply now. While I totally get why everyone loves the V1, I am gonna go against the grain a bit here. If you are looking to save money without losing HSS or TTL, I would actually point you toward the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon. A lot of people think you absolutely need those expensive Li-ion packs for speed, but honestly, if you pair this flash with Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Rechargeable Batteries, the recycle time is plenty fast for ceremonies. Plus, if your batteries die, you can literally buy replacements at a gas station in a pinch. You just cant do that with the V1 or V860 models. It is a much more practical, budget-friendly setup for the 90D in my opinion, and it feels really well balanced on that specific body. Just a quick tip to save you some cash while getting the same results.
Stumbled on this and yeah, Godox is the play. If the V1 is too pricey, the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-Ion Flash is technically superior for some. It has the same 76Ws output and HSS support but includes a physical switch for manual/TTL. The 1.5s recycle time beats the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT which takes about 3s on AA batteries. Its a specs beast for the 90D.
Hey! Congrats on the 90D, its a solid beast for events. Honestly, unless you have a massive budget, I would skip the native Canon flashes. They are super reliable but way too expensive for what you get these days. I have been using the Godox V1-C Li-ion Round Head Speedlite for Canon on my 90D for over a year now and its basically perfect. The big selling point is the lithium-ion battery. You dont have to mess with AA batteries anymore and the recycle time is insanely fast, like 1.5 seconds at full power. It handles E-TTL and HSS perfectly for those outdoor shots you mentioned. If the V1 is too pricey, the Godox V860III-C TTL Flash for Canon is another great pick. It uses the same battery system but has a standard head. Either way, Godox is the way to go for the 90D imo.
> I really need something that supports full E-TTL because I don't always have time to fiddle with manual settings when things are moving fast. Reliability is definitely the most important thing when you are shooting fast-paced events. I always say its better to have a setup that works every time than something fancy that glitches. It reminds me of this wedding I shot a few years ago where the catering company actually ran out of food. It was a total disaster and everyone was starving during the speeches. I ended up sharing my granola bars with the bride because she was getting lightheaded. I usually pack a bunch of snacks in my camera bag just in case, but man, that venue was totally unprepared. The DJ also tripped over a power cord and killed the lights for like ten minutes while people were trying to dance in the dark. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
