Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS 90D, and while I’m absolutely loving the 32.5MP sensor and the overall speed of the body, I’ve quickly realized that the built-in pop-up flash just isn't cutting it for the indoor portraits and event work I’ve been doing lately. I’m looking to invest in a solid external flash, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available right now.
I really need something that fully supports E-TTL II for accurate metering and, ideally, has High-Speed Sync (HSS) so I can use it for fill light during outdoor shoots without being limited by the sync speed. I’ve been looking at the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT because of the native reliability, but I’ve also seen a lot of buzz around the Godox V1 and the V860III because of their lithium-ion batteries and faster recycle times.
Since the 90D has such a fast burst rate, I’m particularly concerned about finding a flash that can keep up without overheating during a long session. My budget is around $200-$350. Does anyone here have a go-to flash for their 90D that they absolutely swear by? Also, have any of you run into weird compatibility issues with third-party triggers on this specific body?
> Since the 90D has such a fast burst rate, I’m particularly concerned about finding a flash that can keep up without overheating during a long session. Respectfully, I'd consider another option besides the 430EX if you really want to leverage that 10fps burst speed. So, I was shooting a high-paced indoor sports banquet with my 90D last year and I brought the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT Flash thinking the native reliability was the way to go. The E-TTL II was definitely accurate, but honestly, the recycle time on those AA batteries just could not keep up when I needed to fire off a quick sequence. Ngl, it was super frustrating watching the 'busy' light blink while the best moments were happening right in front of me. I ended up grabbing the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash for Canon and it basically solved all my speed issues. While the 430EX takes around 3 seconds to recycle after a full dump, the V860III does it in about 1.5s because of that lithium-ion battery. Plus, you get like 480 full-power shots on one charge, which is insane compared to fumbling with AAs mid-shoot. If youre worried about compatibility, the Godox XPro-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger works perfectly with the 90D menu system. I havent had any weird glitches with HSS either. The big lesson for me was that even though native gear is 'safer,' the technical specs of the V860III are just a better match for a body as fast as the 90D. Youll be much happier during those long event sessions... trust me! gl! 👍
honestly... if ur looking for value, the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon is the way to go. it handles HSS and E-TTL like a champ on the 90D for way less cash. i mean, you lose the lithium battery speed, but AAs are easy to swap. i know triggers were mentioned already, but the Godox XProII-C Wireless Flash Trigger is super reliable with this body. definitely the best bang for your buck imo!!
agreeing with the point about the recycle times on lithium being a game changer tbh because looking at the market data right now the older AA-based units just cant compete with the voltage stability of a modern li-ion cell... if youre pushing that 10fps on the 90D you realy need a unit with a high GN and active thermal management. basically Godox has won the mid-tier market because their E-TTL II integration is nearly 1:1 with native Canon logic now so you arent losing much. i'd look at the Godox V860III-C over the V1 if you want a more traditional beam pattern but still need that insane battery life... honestly the recycle time is sub-1.5 seconds at full power which is exactly what you need for event work and it wont overheat as fast as the older V860II models did. TL;DR: Skip AAs and get the Godox V860III-C—it's the industry standard for price-to-performance right now and fits your budget perfectly.
sooo i totally get where youre coming from... i went through a real phase of frustration with my 90D when i first started doing event work. honestly i was trying to save a buck and went with a popular third-party brand because everyone said the lithium batteries were like, insane. well... unfortunately they were right about the speed, but the build quality just wasnt there. i was shooting a wedding reception and the flash literally cut out because it couldnt handle the heat. so embarrassing right? heres what i recommend based on my bad luck: seriously stick with the native canon gear if ur budget allows. i know the price tag hurts but the reliability is highkey worth it. i had so many issues with exposure consistency on those off-brand units. basically the e-ttl ii would just get confused and id end up with blown out faces or dark backgrounds. it was not as good as expected at all. WARNING: be super careful with those third-party triggers too!! i had a setup where the trigger would cause my 90D to lag between shots. like i'd press the shutter and nothing would happen for a split second. plus the hss worked maybe 60% of the time?? totally unreliable for outdoor fill. lesson learned for me was that the 90D is a beast and it pushes flashes hard. if ur doing high burst rates, those lithium ones from other brands look tempting but they can be buggy with canon's newer pins... i think? i ended up going back to the standard canon speedlite units and even though they use aa batteries which kinda sucks, they never miss a beat or overheat on me. gl with whatever u pick though!! 👍
