Hey everyone! I have been shooting with my Canon 80D for a few years now and recently added a 90D to my kit for some freelance event work. I am starting to get more bookings for indoor parties and small weddings, and I have realized the pop-up flash just isn't cutting it anymore. It is too harsh and does not have the reach I need for larger rooms.

I am looking for a reliable external flash that pairs well with both these bodies. I have been looking at a few options but I am a bit overwhelmed by the choices available right now. Here is what I am specifically looking for:

  • Full TTL compatibility so I do not have to fiddle with manual settings during fast-paced events
  • High-Speed Sync (HSS) because I do a lot of outdoor portraits and need to balance harsh sunlight
  • Fast recycle times since I hate waiting for the flash to catch up when things are moving fast

I have heard great things about the Canon 600EX II-RT, but the price tag is pretty steep for my current budget. On the other hand, I see a lot of people recommending the Godox V1 or the V860III because of the lithium batteries. Does anyone here use these specific cameras with a third-party flash, or should I stick with the native Canon gear? I would love to hear which one you think offers the best balance of reliability and value. Which external flash works best for this setup?

I'd go with the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT for peace of mind. The Godox V860III-C TTL Flash has better battery life, but third-party stuff makes me nervous about long-term reliability.

Just found this thread! When I first started shooting events with my 90D, I was basically obsessed with recycle times and thermal cutoff data. For your needs, I would definitely check out the Godox V1C Round Head Flash. The round head provides a much more natural, circular light fall-off compared to the traditional rectangular heads. It features a 2600mAh Li-ion battery that gives around 480 full-power flashes, which is insane for long weddings. If youre really trying to save money, the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II TTL Speedlite is a solid budget pick. It has a Guide Number of 60 at ISO 100 and fits perfectly into the Canon RT wireless system.

  • Godox V1C: Better light quality, faster recycle times, lithium battery.
  • Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II: Great price, full Canon RT compatibility, uses AA batteries. Personally, the lithium battery in the V1 saved me so much hassle with carrying dozens of rechargeable AAs. Just make sure to grab an extra battery pack just in case tho... its worth it.

Honestly, you cant go wrong with any of the lithium powered units from Godox. They are way more affordable than native gear and the recycle speed is basically perfect for weddings.

Been thinking about your setup and honestly, if youre worried about reliability during events, you might want to look at the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash. I know everyone is hyped on lithium batteries these days, but for weddings, I prefer having a unit that takes standard AAs. It is a total lifesaver if you forget to charge a proprietary pack or if a charger fails... you can just run to any store and grab a pack of batteries. The TTL works great with the 90D and it handles HSS perfectly for those bright outdoor shots. Just make sure you pair it with Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA 2500mAh Batteries so the recycle times stay fast. Its a solid, no-nonsense option that feels a lot safer to me than relying on a single specialized battery pack. Its definitely been a reliable workhorse for my gear bag.
