What is the best battery grip for the 5D Mark IV that I can actually rely on? I have a huge wedding shoot in Seattle this Saturday and I realized my batteries just arent gonna cut it for an 10 hour day. I looked at the official Canon BG-E20 but honestly $300 is a lot right now since I just dropped all my cash on a new lens.

I saw some stuff online about the Vello and Neewer versions being okay but then read some horror stories about the shutter button lagging or the weather sealing being totally fake. Is the official one really the only way to go for pro work or is there a third party one that doesnt feel like a toy? I need to order something by tonight to get it here in time...

> Is the official one really the only way to go for pro work Honestly, I've put the Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark IV through hell and it never quit! While the Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark IV has a superior magnesium alloy frame, the Vello is 95% there for way less cash. I once shot a rainy 12-hour wedding with it and the buttons felt amazing! Highly recommend!

Ive found Vivitar Pro Series Multi-Power Battery Grip for Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is solid.

  • Gold-plated contacts
  • Consistent amperage delivery Technical tests show zero shutter lag during bursts.

No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.

  • Just be careful taking some of these recommendations at face value. I've been doing this long enough to know that a grip working for one person doesn't mean it won't fry your circuits the next day. I once had a third-party one literally melt its own battery tray mid-shoot... I had to pry the thing off with a screwdriver and almost ruined the pins on the camera body. Ever since then, I'm super paranoid about the internal build quality and always look at how they're wired up before I trust them. Honestly, you might want to consider doing some deeper digging on the technical side:
  • search for teardown videos on youtube to see the internal soldering
  • check for reddit threads about battery drainage issues with specific brands
  • look for the forum posts about weather sealing failures There's a really good video out there where a guy compares the Canon BG-E20 Battery Grip internals to a few others... just search for '5D Mark IV battery grip comparison' and it should be one of the first results. It's way more helpful than just reading reviews because you can actually see the guts of the thing. Better to spend ten minutes watching that than having your camera die during the vows.

Late to the party but this whole thread is 💯. Glad I found it.
