so im really frustrated with this rebel t7 i just got for my kids birthday party next week. i didnt realize canon removed that middle pin on the hot shoe so none of my old gear works and it feels like i bought a brick. i saw people online saying the godox v860ii or maybe the tt685 is a good fix but then other threads say only the newer 'ii' versions actually work with the t7 and i dont want to waste 120 bucks on something that wont even fire. my budget is pretty tight and i just need something that actually communicates with this specific camera for indoor shots. does anyone know a specific flash that 100% works with this crippled hot shoe?

Ive spent way too much time testing gear for those crippled Canon shoes, tbh. Honestly, a decent option without breaking the bank is the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon. I picked one up last year for a similar event and it worked right out of the box because it has the specific firmware needed for that missing pin. The older version is a total gamble, but the II series is solid and communicates fine.

Ugh I totally feel your pain! I went through the exact same nightmare when I picked up a T7 for a family reunion last year and realized my old gear was basically trash. It was so stressful! But honestly, dont even worry because I found the perfect fix. I ended up getting the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon and it is absolutely amazing! It works like a charm with that weird crippled hot shoe and the exposure is spot on every time. I love it because it is super reliable for indoor stuff. If you really need to save some cash, I also tried the Godox TT350C Mini Flash for Canon and it is fantastic too, just a bit smaller. Both of these definitely fire on the T7 without that middle pin. Youre gonna be totally fine for the birthday party!
