I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS 90D, and while I’m loving the camera, I’ve realized the built-in pop-up flash just isn't cutting it for the indoor event photography I’ve started doing. The light is a bit too harsh, so I’m looking for a solid external flash to help soften things up. I’m specifically looking for something with reliable E-TTL support and high-speed sync for when I’m shooting outdoors. I’ve been looking at the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT, but I’ve also heard great things about Godox units for a better price. Has anyone found a specific flash that pairs perfectly with the 90D's autofocus system? I’d love to hear your top recommendations for a reliable mid-range unit!
Basically, E-TTL uses a pre-flash to calculate exposure instantly, which is HUGE for fast-paced events. If you're on a budget, honestly check out the Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon for around $130! It’s sooo much cheaper than Canon units but still gives you full HSS and reliable AF assist. I love it cuz it’s basically a pro unit at a fraction of the cost. Seriously, it’s a total steal!!
Spent years overpaying for OEM gear till I tried the Godox V1-C Flash for Canon. It’s basically been my 90D workhorse because the round head makes indoor events look way more natural honestly.
Honestly, I've tried many units over the years and the Godox V860III-C Speedlight for Canon is basically the best bang for your buck on the 90D. The AF assist works pretty well and having that Li-ion battery is *literally* a life saver for long events... no more fumbling with AAs! If you want something even softer, the round head on the Godox V1-C Flash for Canon is sooo worth it. gl!
tbh I’m a bit more cautious about third-party gear than most. Everyone loves the savings, but I’ve always been worried about how the electronics talk to each other long-term. Not sure but I think I read somewhere that third-party units can occasionally have weird timing issues with the 90D’s high-speed sync or AF assist beam during firmware shifts. IIRC, the official brand stuff is built specifically for their own communication protocols, which makes it feel wayyy safer for critical shoots where u cant afford a misfire. Honestly, it’s a tough market comparison because the price difference is so big, but ur basically paying for that guaranteed reliability. I’m not 100% certain if the newer third-party stuff has totally fixed those old communication bugs, but for me, the peace of mind with original manufacturer gear is usually worth the premium if ur doing professional event work. Just my two cents from a more conservative perspective!
