Recommended external flash units for Canon EOS 90D sports photography?

I've been using my Canon EOS 90D for indoor sports like volleyball and basketball lately, but I'm really struggling with the poor lighting in some of these gyms. The built-in flash just doesn't have the reach or the recycle speed I need for fast action. I'm looking for an external unit that supports High-Speed Sync (HSS) so I can keep my shutter speeds high. I’ve looked at the Canon 600EX II-RT, but it's a bit pricey. Are there any solid third-party options like Godox that can reliably handle the 90D’s 10fps burst rate without overheating? What flash would you recommend for keeping up with fast-moving athletes on a $300 budget?

sooo, i totally get the struggle. i mean, shooting indoor sports is literally a nightmare without good light. i'm kinda new to this too but i've been using a setup that makes me pretty happy. i was worried about third-party gear breaking or overheating but honestly no complaints so far!! here is how i compared the options for my 90D:
* Godox V860III-C Flash for Canon: around $230. basically has a lithium battery that recycles super fast.
* Godox V1-C Flash for Canon: costs about $260. i think the round head is cool but maybe overkill?
* Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon: only $130. idrk if AAs can keep up with 10fps tho... imo the Godox V860III-C Flash for Canon is the best choice. it actually keeps up with my bursts and the battery lasts forever. just be careful with the HSS cuz it can get hot if ur firing constantly... anyway gl!

Saw this earlier, but respectfully, I'd suggest a different approach... basically dont waste ur cash on AA units for that 90D. For 10fps, you NEED Li-ion or you'll miss half the action. I've tried many, but the Godox V860III-C Li-Ion Flash for Canon is actually the sweet spot. Recycles way faster than the 600EX and wont overheat during sets. Its a lifesaver for gyms tbh! gl

I totally get the hype for the big names, but I actually had a bit of a different experience! I used to think I had to stick with the same brand as my camera to get that 10fps performance, but I was so wrong and wasted so much money lol. I ended up trying a much cheaper alternative brand and honestly? I love it so much more! Here is why:

  • The official one I had actually recycled slower than my current budget-friendly setup.
  • I realized that the interface on the third-party unit I use now is way more intuitive when things are moving fast in the gym.
  • It handles the heat way better! My old one would give me that annoying busy signal right when the play was getting good, but this new one is a total beast. Basically, dont feel like you have to pay the brand tax to get great sports shots. My current setup proves you can get fantastic results without the massive price tag!

Ive tried many setups and basically missed half my shots cuz my old gear was way too slow...
1. How close are you sitting?
2. Do you really need 10fps?
